Leeds United tipped to rival Newcastle and Napoli for signing of in-demand defender

Leeds United have reportedly joined the race to sign Strasbourg defender Gerzino Nyamsi this summer. The 25-year-old enjoyed a strong season with the Blue and Whites last season as the centre back featured in all but four of the side's 38 Ligue 1 clashes.

Standing at an imposing 6ft 5in too, the former Rennes man joined the club for just £1million last year with Newcastle United and Napoli also said to be keen on the defender. According to reports via the Daily Mail, the Whites are set to do battle with both clubs later this summer.

Jesse Marsch's has already recruited right back Rasmus Kristensen, midfielder Marc Roca and attacker Brenden Aaronson in this window, with further onus on improving the side's somewhat leaky backline. With four years left on his current deal at the Stade de la Meinau, it could take a substantial fee to lure the centre back away.

Given United's need for reinforcements in all areas, there is also doubt over their attacking options too, with Patrick Bamford, Joe Gelhradt and Sam Greenwood the only striker options currently at the club. Winger Raphinha also could be on his way given his tenuous links with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Nyamsi does however come with impressive stats to back up his strong season in France, as Strasbourg missed out on European qualification by just a mere three points. The 25-year-old won 21 of his 35 attempted tackles and 90 of his 135 aerial duels last season in the French top flight.
