Leeds United teenager Archie Gray captains England to third place in youth tournament

Archie Gray's Great Uncle Eddie is one of the greatest of a host of famous Scottish players to play for Leeds United. However, the 16-year-old has chosen to play for England, at youth level at least.

Gray is highly regarded at Leeds and also in the international set-up and this was shown in the fact that he captained the England Under-16 side in the prestigious Montaigu Tournament in France. The young Three Lions missed out on the trophy but they did pick up the bronze medal after defeating Portugal on penalties after drawing 1-1 in the third-placed play-off.

The tournament consisted of two groups, with the winners of each facing one another in the final and the two second placed teams meeting for the play-off. England picked up four points from games against the Netherlands and Mexico, after drawing with the former before beating Mexico 3-0.

However, they were unable to top the group as they ended the group stage with a 3-0 defeat to Brazil, who topped the group. Gray will now return to Leeds, where he is likely to play a role in the final games of the Whites' U23 season, as they fight to avoid relegation from Premier League Two Division One.

In December, Gray was named on the bench in the Premier League for the first time, despite being only 15-years-old at the time. The Whites' squad was decimated by injury and Covid, meaning the bench was made up almost entirely of teenagers who had never featured in the division before.
