Leeds United suffer Liverpool double whammy after controversial Marsch-Klopp rulings

Anfield’s touchline will not be out of bounds to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Saturday night, despite breaking the same rule Jesse Marsch was banned for last month. Klopp was sent off during their Manchester City win after reacting angrily to a decision by referee Anthony Taylor.

Mohamed Salah went to ground after a challenge by Bernardo Silva and when a foul was not given, Klopp ran from his technical area in anger, ran back and then waited to shout in the linesman’s face as he came past the Liverpool dugout.

Marsch was sent off at Brentford last month when he was angry a challenge on Crysencio Summerville did not result in a Leeds United penalty. The American also left his technical area, but had longer, heated interactions with the officials before his dismissal.

Each of their offences constituted a breach of FA Rule E3, but while Klopp was fined £30,000 and Marsch £10,000, the latter was forced to watch a match away from the touchline. While The Football Association charged each of the managers, it was an independent regulatory commission which decided their punishments.

Written reasons, which should further explain the inconsistency in these cases, have not yet been published in Klopp’s case. The FA does have the power to appeal if it feels the sanction does not go far enough.

The one difference in the wording of each statement revolves around Marsch’s language. While the behaviour of each coach is condemned, there is no mention of Klopp’s language overstepping the mark.

Today’s Klopp statement said: “Jurgen Klopp has been fined £30,000 for breaching FA Rule E3 during Liverpool’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday, October 16, 2022.

“The manager accepted his behaviour during the 86th minute was improper and an independent regulatory commission imposed his sanction during a hearing. This sanction is subject to appeal by either Jurgen Klopp or The FA following receipt of the independent regulatory commission’s written reasons.”

Marsch’s statement said: “Leeds United’s Jesse Marsch has been fined £10,000 and suspended from the touchline for their next fixture following a breach of FA Rule E3 that happened at their match against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, September 3, 2022.

“The manager admitted his language and behaviour during the 64th minute of that game was improper. An independent regulatory commission subsequently imposed his sanctions.”
