Leeds United suffer another postponement as decider called off and fixture pile-up feared

Leeds United have had to deal with their fair share of postponed matches this season, including Premier League ties against Liverpool and Aston Villa.

The Whites' visit to Anfield has been rearranged for next week, although their meeting with Aston Villa - originally scheduled for December 28, 2021 - is yet to receive a new date.

Leeds' U23 side saw their Premier League Cup fixture with Wigan Athletic rescheduled late last year, due to a frozen pitch.

Due to have been played on December 16, 2021, concerns over the state of the Lancashire FA's County Ground surface meant that match was rescheduled for January 14, 2022.

Leeds triumphed 2-1 in that fixture, and will be hoping for a similar sequence of events with their tie against Mansfield Town U23s.

The young Whites were scheduled to play this evening, but heavy rainfall over the weekend means the Impact Arena has failed a pitch inspection.

That fixture has now been postponed .

This means Leeds' U23s will be forced to wait in discovering their fate in this season's Premier League Cup.

Currently, Leeds are in second place with seven points, and are on course to progress to the knockout rounds from Group E.

Mansfield trail the Whites by three points but have a game in hand, and should they defeat Leeds in the rearranged fixture, would leapfrog them on goal difference.

Elsewhere in Group E, Sunderland and Wigan Athletic's U23 sides are still on course to play this evening, which could put an end to the Black Cats' PL Cup campaign.

Anything but victory will consign Sunderland to eliminatileeon, but a win would place them one point ahead of Leeds in the Group E standings, meaning Mark Jackson's side would require at least a draw in their rearranged fixture with Mansfield to progress.

As yet, there are no suggestions as to when Leeds' tie with Mansfield will be rescheduled.

Although, with Leeds' thin senior squad and the knock-on effects fixture pile-up and injuries have on the age-groups below, Leeds will be hoping the match does not fall between February 20 and February 26 when the Whites face Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the space of six days.
