Leeds United star Daniel James' transfer value has changed dramatically just over a year since Man Utd departure

Daniel James sealed a loan move to Fulham on deadline day from parent club Leeds United.

It put an end to a few weeks’ worth of speculation surrounding the Wales winger, with Tottenham, Everton and Leicester City all said to be interested in him.

His first season at Elland Road didn’t quite go t plan, with the Whites changing manager and struggling at the wrong end of the table for much of the campaign. For the latest news about Welsh football, sign up to our newsletter here.

James had moved to the club from Manchester United in August last year in a deal worth £25million.

In May of 2021, the experts at CIES Football Observatory estimated his value somewhere in the region of €50-70million (£43-60million).

They use a complex matrix to work out transfer values, taking into account a number of variables such as contract duration, performance, age, career progression, international status, inflation and club level and wealth.

That price tag has now dropped off quite dramatically.

In May of this year, the same site valued him at €30-40million, and now they estimate his value at €20-30million.

His manager at Leeds, Jesse Marsch, explained why they let him go to the Cottagers. He said: "It was clear that if we wanted to add something that we needed to move something. I hate speaking about it that way because I love Dan James, he's an incredible person and he gives everything to the group always.

“When we were trying to think about how to get the balance right in the team, this was the key garnering the most interest and it was the only way that we could create flexibility to try and go out and add a striker position that we felt we needed. So I wish that we wouldn't have had to do it and even the way that it went down because it was kind of tough for Dan.

“We discussed it weeks before the transfer deadline about the possibility and then we had a lot of open conversations with Dan and it was tough at the end because I know he likes it here and his family likes it here.

“I wish him luck and I really liked him and I hope he has a good season and a good World Cup and hopefully then we'll see him again next time.”

James still has four years to run on his Leeds contract but transfer insider Dean Jones believes he’s played his last game for the club.

He told GiveMeSport: “I mean, all signs suggest that that’s it for him now. I mean, they wouldn’t be letting him out on loan to another Premier League club, which is essentially going to be a kind of rival in terms of league position to season you would imagine, to then bring him back.”
