Leeds United's Tyler Adams singled out as one of the 'standout performers' at the World Cup

Danny Higginbotham has singled out United States captain Tyler Adams as one of the 'standout performers' at the 2022 World Cup so far.

The Leeds United midfielder has played a leading role in guiding the United States to the knockout stages of the tournament. USA are yet to taste defeat, after drawing against Wales and England respectively, and securing their place in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Iran.

Adams, who is the youngest captain at the World Cup finals, produced a disciplined display in the goalless draw against England, and impressed once again in the decisive win over Iran. The 23-year-old has received a number of plaudits for his performances in Qatar, and Higginbotham has been especially excited by the midfielder.

The ex-Southampton and Stoke City defender wrote to his 75.8k Twitter followers: "Tyler Adams immense once again. One of the standout performers in the World Cup so far."

USA will be aiming to progress to the quarter-finals for only the third time in their history when they face the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on Saturday.

The Star and Stripes failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2018, but have now reached the knockout stages in five of the last seven World Cup finals that they've participated in.
