Leeds United's Tyler Adams on his Marc Roca partnership, Dani Olmo advice and Luis Sinisterra

Tyler Adams is confident that he can develop a strong midfield understanding with fellow Leeds United recruit Marc Roca. Adams and Roca are two of seven players to sign at Elland Road this summer, with the Whites backing Jesse Marsch in the transfer window by adding a raft of talent to his playing squad.

They have only spent an hour or so together on the field of play so far, starting Leeds’ pre-season clash with Aston Villa at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. However, Adams and Roca could feature together once more against Crystal Palace on Friday morning in Perth as the club round off their Australian tour with another clash against Premier League opposition.

The partnership is still in its embryonic stages, of course, but Adams is confident that they will be able to hit it off in the middle of the park under Marsch.

“I didn’t play against Marc in the Bundesliga, we didn’t have that opportunity,” the United States international said. “But I spoke with Dani Olmo, who I played with at RB Leipzig and he told me right away that me and Marc are going to have a good connection and a good balance of feistiness and tidy on the ball.

“He’s a lefty, I’m a righty so we already have our sides figured out. It’s still in the developing phase but I think we have a really good balance when we play with each other.”

Adams only signed for Leeds at the start of the month, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal in West Yorkshire before travelling with the squad to Gold Coast for the start of the club’s pre-season tour. It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for the 23-year-old, of that there is no doubt, but he’s more than settling in alongside his new teammates and under Marsch, who has known since his days playing for New York Red Bulls as a teenager.

“It’s good to get this exposure in Australia against the Premier League teams,” he added. “I think for me and a bunch of the other new guys it’s about getting chemistry with some of the players.

“We need to establish ourselves, work on the tactics and fine tune things before the start of the season. This group has been so welcoming and that caught me a little bit by surprise. Whenever you’re the new guy in the locker room it can cause a bit of upturn but coming in knowing a few of the guys already, playing against Jack (Harrison) in the past, knowing Jesse, knowing Brenden (Aaronson) and Rasmus (Kristensen) and some of these guys, we’ve come together and that’s a good feeling.”

Asked about those who had caught his eye, Adams added: “There’s a bunch of quality players, Luis (Sinisterra) is a new guy as well and you could see his talent right away and what he brings to the table. Robin Koch, I played against him when he was at Freiburg in the Bundesliga and you can see his quality.”
