Junior Firpo has suggested the spending power of English clubs means there is no desire for a European Super League. A staggering transfer window saw Premier League clubs spend over £800million last month - the highest January spend ever.
Enormous broadcasting and advertising deals have transformed England into the most lucrative destination in world football. Sides fighting relegation in the top flight can often outmuscle “bigger” foreign clubs for players.
In 2021, football was rocked by the European Super League fiasco. While six English clubs initially backed the proposals, those from Spain and Italy were understood to be most keen on a new, money-driven competition.

The perception is that other European clubs are envious of the Premier League juggernaut, with heavyweights like Barcelona and Juventus facing financial uncertainty in recent times.
Ex-Barca defender Firpo cited Leeds United’s recent activity as a sign of English clubs’ “power” in the transfer market. For context, the Whites spent £3million more than every La Liga club combined last month. The 26-year-old, who has endured on-field struggles since his switch in 2021, also insisted he is finally adapting to the culture change.
“This is a Super League,” Firpo told Spanish outlet Sport1. “The capacity the clubs have to sign is very great. Between summer and winter we will have spent £150million.
“I am increasingly adapted to the Premier League. Football here (in England) is very crazy, very transitional. Now you attack, now you have to defend. There is no pause like there is in La Liga, But it is true that, tactically, teams are somewhat more disorganised.”
