Leeds United's early form showing Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher's transfer doubts unfounded

The 2022/23 season has gone quite well for Leeds United compared to last season - while they never made it higher than 15th, Jesse Marsch's men currently sit in ninth after their first six games.

Wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea and draws against Everton and Southampton have seen them take eight points so far this season but could potentially have to wait up to a month for their next game after the postponement of Monday's fixture against Nottingham Forest.

However, many pundits predicted a much worse start to the season - and a bad season overall - for the Whites after their campaign last year. Here's what some of them said...

Neville and Carragher's transfer doubts proved wrong so far

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have enjoyed a lot of success together but have at times clashed over their opinions of football against one another.

On the Football Daily YouTube channel earlier this year, while rating Leeds' transfer business in the summer transfer window from A to E, they both disagreed on where to place the Whites.

"You've got to put them C- or D," said Neville.

Carragher replied: "C!? They've lost their two best players."

"I know, but there was nothing they could do about it," said Neville.

"I know, but where they are right now - they've not had a great window," the former Liverpool defender claimed. "They've brought in a lot of players who Jesse Marsch knows."

Sutton's relegation prediction

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton did not have much hope for Marsch's men as he wrote for the BBC just before the season began. He said: "Along with Fulham and Bournemouth, I’ve got Leeds as going down this season."

"They only just stayed up last time and then sold their two best players, Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, this summer."

Warnock backed Leeds

Former Whites manager Neil Warnock said that Leeds would steer clear of the relegation battle, leaving the newly-promoted teams to scrap it out amongst themselves.

Warnock's bottom three consisted of AFC Bournemouth, Fulham and Southampton as he said: "It will be tough for the teams that have come up and I think some of the more established teams will find it hard again this season. Injuries and mid season transfers will play a big part."

McNulty on Elland Road role

For the BBC, Phil McNulty predicted Leeds to finish 16th while writing: "Leeds scraped to survival on the final day of last season and have subsequently lost two of their most influential players in Raphinha and home-grown hero Kalvin Phillips.

"This makes life tough for Jesse Marsch as he tries to rebuild on what he inherited from the iconic figure of Marcelo Bielsa.

"I think Leeds, rather like Everton, will survive based on the fanatical and unswerving support they receive at home. Elland Road must be their fortress - otherwise they could be in trouble."
