Leeds United's contrasting starts to last two years compared bodes well for Premier League battle

Leeds United continued their excellent start to the season with an emphatic 3-0 win over Chelsea. The Whites dismantled title hopefuls Chelsea thanks to goals from Brenden Aaronson, Rodrigo Moreno and Jack Harrison to move up to third place in the Premier League after seven points from their opening three matches.

In comparison to 12 months ago, the start to the season has been night and day. It took Leeds until the ninth game of the season in late October to reach the seven-point mark, as the Whites struggled for wins on a consistent basis.

It also took Leeds until their seventh match – a home clash with Watford – to earn their first victory. As the games ticked on, Leeds were under more and more pressure to obtain that maiden three points, which was not the case this time around.

Leeds secured a victory on the opening day against Wolves and so were able to use the confidence from getting that monkey off their back to continue that into the following two games. That said, this is a Premier League season that feels like no other with the standard arguably as high as it’s ever been.

The middle group of teams will all feel as though they are capable of beating each other, which is something that has not been the case in recent years. The likes of Norwich City, Watford, Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham have all been cut adrift from the rest in the last two seasons, but it is already looking like a much more evenly matched division this time around.

Leeds will need to continue their momentum in the coming weeks, particularly given that on paper it is a more favourable run of fixtures.
