Americans will own a third of the Premier League next season now that Todd Boehly’s purchase of Chelsea has been given government approval. Chelsea were put up for sale this season shortly before their owner, Roman Abramovich, was sanctioned over his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
That sale is now expected to go through, with a consortium led by American Todd Boehly paying a reported £4.25 billion for the club. It will push American ownership of Premier League clubs up to 34%, which is a bigger share than from any other country.
Owners from the USA already fully control Arsenal, Fulham, Liverpool and Manchester United. That accounts for 20% of Premier League clubs.

They also have large stakes in other clubs as well. A total of 72% of Crystal Palace is owned by people from the USA.
Wes Edens controls 50% of Aston Villa, with Egypt’s Nassef Sawiris controlling the other half. The San Francisco 49ers own 44% of Leeds United, after chairman Andrea Radrizzani first partnered with the investment arm of the NFL franchise in 2018.
Manchester City are 15% owned by USA firm Silver Lake, while West Ham have an 8% USA-based ownership. Owners from England now only account for 19% of Premier League club ownership.
However, that could increase if Huddersfield Town win promotion in Sunday’s playoff final.
