Leeds United's Adam Forshaw issues positive injury update and hope for Newcastle United clash

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw is hopeful of being fit for Saturday’s clash with Newcastle at Elland Road.

Alongside Junior Firpo, Forshaw was one of two players who limped off in the first half of yesterday’s 3-2 win at West Ham United with a hamstring injury.

After making his first league start in over two years back in November against Leicester City, Forshaw had got through nine consecutive matches unscathed.

As a result for his excellent performances, the 30-year-old signed a new one-and-a-half-year deal at Elland Road on Friday.

However, after he was forced off injured at the London Stadium Leeds fans would have been forgiven for fearing the worst.

Forshaw, though, has moved quickly to calm those fears, revealing via his Instagram that his injury is minor and he remains hopeful of being fit for the huge clash with Newcastle this weekend.

He said: “Thanks for all the messages, it’s only a small hamstring injury.

“I’m fighting to be ready for Saturday, if not I’ll be back straight after the break.

“Brilliant performance from everyone yesterday.”

Despite the loss of two senior players in the same minute of the first half, Leeds battled to earn a superb three points against West Ham.

Both Lewis Bate and Leo Hjelde came off the bench to make their Premier League debuts and stood in excellently to relieve the blow of losing Forshaw and Firpo.

Forshaw has been paramount for the Whites in recent weeks, though, standing in for the long-term absentee Kalvin Phillips, who was forced to undergo surgery on a hamstring injury.
