Leeds United's 'absurd' Liverpool tactics slammed and Bielsa criticised in national media round-up

The national media has suggested that Marcelo Bielsa's three-and-a-half-year stint at Elland Road is coming to an end.

Leeds were embarrassed on their travels again on Wednesday as Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool smashed six past them to plunge the Whites into more relegation misery.

With a tricky test against Spurs next, questions are beginning to be raised about how long Bielsa has left in the hot seat.

This is what the national press are saying after last night's horror show...

Bielsa ‘likely to quit’ in summer

Another embarrassing display on the road means Leeds will likely be looking for a new manager in the summer, according to The Sun’s Charlie Wyett.

“Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa now looks increasingly likely to quit at the end of the campaign,” he wrote.

“They continue to struggle as the spine of their team, namely Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford remain out. Bielsa’s side conceded 54 goals last season but already, after 25 games, they have leaked two more.

“But even had their key men been playing, they would have had little answer against Klopp’s irresistible team who are playing every bit as well as when they won the title two years ago.”

Bielsa only man to blame if Leeds relegated

The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe thinks Marcelo Bielsa’s ‘naive’ tactics will make him the only man responsible if Leeds are relegated in May.

“Leeds’ game plan - their prototype open, attacking approach against a team as punishing as Jurgen Klopp’s - was beyond naive,” he wrote.

“It was absurd - like trying to deal with a river about to burst its banks armed only with a bucket.

“Bielsa has too much credit in the bank at Elland Road to have his job scrutinised on the back of a recent, injury-hit run. But to preserve his legacy, the professor would be wise to take a lesson from some of his students.

“Bielsa’s meticulously prepared plan A may indeed be the work of a visionary. A true coaching genius knows when plan B is required, or at the very least plan A needs an urgent upgrade.”

Liverpool v Leeds fixture at risk

The Daily Mail’s Dominic King believes Liverpool v Leeds - one of English football’s most intense showdowns - is at risk of not being contested next season.

He wrote: “Liverpool versus Leeds is a fixture steeped in history but, much more of this from the ramshackle visitors, and there won’t be a renewal of it in the 2022-23 campaign.

“They can’t stop conceding – no clean sheets since November 30 and the worst goals against column in the division – and having a defence with more holes in it than Rab C Nesbitt’s string vest was a fatal combination.

“Liverpool duly took advantage and proceeded to rip Leeds to shreds.

Bamford and Phillips’ return key

The Mirror’s match report highlighted the absences of Leeds’ ‘two most influential players’ as the reason for their slump in form.

“Even on commentary, the absence of Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford was regularly referenced,” Samuel Meade wrote.

“Every team has injuries, but when arguably the two most influential players are absent any team would struggle and Leeds are no different.

“Phillips' quality at the base of midfield has seen him linked with top four outfits and afforded him an England career.

“Leeds had conceded 32 goals in the 10 games without him before tonight - that figure has only worsened.

“Tonight showed that, whilst the Yorkshire will forever be expansive and ambitious, their defensive frailties will always be an issue - especially if they're not scoring at the other end.”
