Leeds United relegation picture analysed after hectic Premier League afternoon

Leeds United somehow remain one point above the relegation zone after a chaotic day of Premier League action. Defeat at Chelsea did little to alter the table as far as the Whites are concerned.

Javi Gracia’s side were undone 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, with Wesley Fofana scoring the only goal. At one point, that result appeared catastrophic as Bournemouth led 2-0 away at league leaders Arsenal.

An 11th-second strike from Phillip Billing put the Cherries in front before Marcos Senesi doubled the advantage in the second half. The scoreline drastically impacted both ends of the Premier League but goals from Thomas Partey, Ben White and Reiss Nelson secured a fairytale turnaround.

While the win restored Arsenal’s five-point lead, Leeds supporters also breathed a sigh of relief as their club remained above the bottom three. Had Bournemouth won, the Whites would have plummeted into the drop zone.

Southampton also triumphed 1-0 over Leicester City in the late kick-off to give themselves a fighting chance of survival. Few commentators gave the Saints a prayer a fortnight ago but wins against Chelsea and the Foxes - with a defeat to Leeds sandwiched in between - have given them a chance.

All three clubs in the relegation places are on 21 points from 25 games, with Everton set to take on Nottingham Forest tomorrow. Should the Toffees win at the City Ground, they will switch places with Leeds and escape the bottom three.

One side in danger of being sucked into the dogfight is West Ham United. David Moyes’ men were battered 4-0 by Brighton and, astonishingly, sit just one point ahead of Leeds.

Throw a Europa Conference League campaign into the mix and the Hammers could easily fall further down the table. Just six points separate 12th-placed Crystal Palace from Bournemouth, who are rock-bottom of the Premier League.
