Leeds United player ratings as Jack Harrison and Dan James fail to fire in deflating Newcastle win

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

1 Illan Meslier

Not an enormous amount of work to get through, but his save to deny a rasping Jonjo Shelvey volley in the first half was outstanding. A couple of other close-range stops stood out before an offside flag ruled them out anyway. Will point to an obstructed view when the free-kick flew past him. 6

2 Luke Ayling (c)

Did get himself forward to support attacks, but didn't find himself with the opening to craft anything of note. Did handle Allan Saint-Maximin very, very well. 7

14 Diego Llorente

Another demonstration of why he is the club's best centre-back. Read danger, snuffed it out, retained possession and found teammates in dangerous positions. Battled well when the crosses did come into the box too. 8

21 Pascal Struijk

Did not quite catch the eye as Llorente did, but just as useful and trustworthy in defence. Stood up well to the challenges of Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood. 7

15 Stuart Dallas

Another very solid performance from Dallas, who gave Ryan Fraser nothing all afternoon. 7

5 Robin Koch

Very solid performance from the Germany international as he improves in this deep-lying role. Gave very little change to any of the Newcastle midfielders all afternoon. 7

10 Raphinha

Carried the main attacking threat on the whole, as usual, but didn't provide the cut and thrust needed to really endanger Martin Dubravka's goal. 6

19 Rodrigo

A decent return to the starting line-up for Rodrigo with some decent passing into the final third from deep. Couldn't quite deliver in the most dangerous moments around the box. 5

43 Mateusz Klich

Did well in the first half and provided brilliant attacking support from deep, but vanished in the second half. 5

22 Jack Harrison

Proved to be one of the best outlets for Leeds in the opening half an hour as Kieran Trippier failed to keep a lid on the winger. Did drift out of the game in the second half though. 5

20 Daniel James

Pressed well and linked up nicely, but still waiting for anything remotely dangerous from him in the penalty box as the side's striker. 5

Substitutes

13 Kristoffer Klaesson

11 Tyler Roberts (on for James 71min)

Came on just before Newcastle's goal and didn't really change the flow of the match. 6

26 Lewis Bate

30 Joe Gelhardt (on for Klich 80min)

A late switch to raise heartbeats and hopes, but little fell for him. N/A

33 Leo Hjelde

39 Stuart McKinstry

45 Liam McCarron

52 Kris Moore

54 Nohan Kenneh
