Leeds United news as Whites linked with Burnley swoop and Rowett makes survival claim

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Saturday, 28 May 2022.

Collins interest

Leeds United are said to be interesting in signing Nathan Collins as they believe he is a player with huge potential. The Burnley centre-back was a rare shining light in their thoroughly disappointing season which ultimately ended with relegation.

Despite finishing above the Clarets, Leeds were nowhere as stable at the back and look keen to address their defensive frailties this summer. Only Norwich conceded more goals than the Whites who leaked 79 goals in their 38 games, 26 more than relegated Burnley.

Rowett

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has admitted he was pleased to see Leeds United stay in the Premier League. The Whites secured their top-flight status on the final day of the season with a 2-1 win over Brentford, moving ahead of Burnley who were beaten by Newcastle United.

Burnley joined Norwich City and Watford in being relegated to the Championship, with those two sides having been promoted just a year earlier. The fixture between Leeds and Millwall has developed quite an edge during their seasons in both the Championship and League One together.

Via quotes from London News Online, Rowett claimed that although Millwall fans may be disappointed the two clubs cannot renew rivalries, from a personal perspective he is pleased as he believes the Championship is a harder division with Leeds in it.

He said: “I’m not disappointed at Leeds not being in the Championship. It is one of the places which is very difficult to go and play football, it’s a great atmosphere. I appreciate it is a brilliant away day and the rivalry is strong between the fans, but as a manager you look at the clubs you think will be really, really strong next season.

Rush backs Leeds to improve

Ian Rush has backed Leeds United to push for the top 10 next season providing they don’t encounter the same injury problems. The Whites secured Premier League safety by the skin of their teeth with a 2-1 final day victory at Brentford.

In a season of struggle, Leeds were dealt with several injury blows to a number of key players across the course of the campaign. And Rush thinks if they are able to put out a fully fit squad consistently, while retaining key players, the top 10 is a ‘realistic’ aim.

He told Gambling.com : “It remains to be seen whether Jesse Marsch is the right man for the job. However, he has to get a fully fit squad to succeed next season. The injuries completely ruined Leeds this season. They must retain their big players, such as Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha

“With the squad they have at the moment, Leeds can have realistic hopes of finishing in the top half next season, although there’s a lot of competition for the top 10 now.”
