Leeds United news as Whites learn heavy cost to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Wednesday, February 15.

Leeds United learn heavy cost to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as their new boss

It will cost Leeds around £5.3 million to buy Nuno Espirito Santo out of his contract at Al-Ittihad Club, according to The Times.

Although it is believed the former Wolves boss has been interviewed for the position, the report adds that he has not yet been offered to the job.

Leeds are still searching for a replacement for Jesse Marsch, who was sacked on February 6. The club have received knockbacks in their attempts to appoint Carlos Corberan, Arne Slot, and Andoni Iraola, although the latter still remains in contention.

Caretaker boss Michael Skubala is the bookmakers' favourite to become the next Leeds manager, although Espirito Santo and Steven Gerrard are joint-second favourites at 4/1 on Sky Bet.

Santo is renowned for his successful spell in charge of Wolves. He led them to the Championship title in 2018, before guiding them to UEFA Europa League qualification in his first season in the Premier League.

He joined Tottenham Hotspur in June 2021 but was sacked just four months into his reign. Espirito Santo returned to management with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad in July 2022, and held talks with former club Wolves over a potential return in October.

Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch's talks with Southampton 'break down'

Talks between Jesse Marsch and Southampton over the managerial vacancy at St Mary's have reportedly broken down.

The former Leeds United boss was on the verge of succeeding Nathan Jones, who was fired on Sunday after just three months at the helm. However, negotiations have faltered, supposedly due to Marsch wanting a longer contract than the short-term deal proposed to him by Southampton.

Southampton sit at the foot of the Premier League table and have won just one of their last 11 league games.

Leeds United misstep may have just unlocked the door to risky strategy that must work immediately

Frustrating as it must have been for some inside Leeds United, the sighting of Alfred Schreuder at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon may have helped their head coach saga. When the former Ajax boss was seen with head of European recruitment Gaby Ruiz it was patently clear why he was at the Manchester United match.

Schreuder had been in the city for a meeting with Victor Orta on Saturday night, one of many coaches the director of football has held exploratory talks with, and he chose to stick around for Sunday’s match. The 50-year-old would watch the game from one of the boxes in the Jack Charlton Stand before coming over with Ruiz to see Orta and Angus Kinnear on the opposite side.

By Monday afternoon, Orta was flying out to the Netherlands to make it clear to Schreuder, who had already flown back on Sunday night, the club would not be taking their talks any further. The Spaniard is keen to do his business face to face as much as the hours in the day allow.
