Leeds United news as Whites earn vital point at 'hostile' Elland Road

Sunday saw Leeds United pick up a potentially season saving point against Brighton & Hove Albion as Pascal Struijk headed home from close range to bag the Whites a 92 minute equaliser.

Leeds battled hard throughout the contest and were unlucky not to see a number of chances nestle inside the Brighton net, leaving it late for Struijk to strike.

The point moves Leeds out of the relegation zone above Burnley. While the Clarets still have a game in hand on Jesse Marsch's side, they have to travel to Aston Villa in midweek, who they lost 3-1 to the weekend before last.

It gives Leeds a fighting chance at the bottom of the table heading into their final game of the season against Brentford away. Here are your Leeds United morning headlines...

'Magic' Joe Gelhardt the hero as Leeds United supporters react to dramatic Brighton draw

There can be no doubt that Leeds would not have picked up a point against Brighton had it not been for the heroics of forward Joe Gelhardt.

Collecting a clipped ball in stoppage time from Diego Llorente, Gelhardt got to the byline inside the box with little to no space to create anything.

However, a dummy on Lewis Dunk followed by a chip over the centre back's trailing leg saw the 20-year-old float a delightful cross into the path of Struijk waiting at the back post to head home.

Leeds have sorely missed an out and out striker this season in the absence of Patrick Bamford. In Gelhardt, they have a talent who has shown glimpses of real promise in a number of cameo roles this season.

Graham Potter's 'hostile' Elland Road admission after late pressure tells against Leeds United

“This [Elland Road] is one of the most hostile places you're going to get in football, in England certainly," said Brighton manager Graham Potter in the wake of his sides 1-1 draw with Leeds.

Elland Road was at its 'hostile' best against Brighton, giving Leeds an added edge. Despite some frustrating performances at home of late, the Elland Road support has never dwindled in terms of cheering on the team on the pitch.

While there were some chants aimed at the Leeds board, Potter's admission suggests his Brighton side felt like they were playing against 12 men late on in a result that could have saved the Whites season.

Every word Jesse Marsch said on Joe Gelhardt, half-time team talk, Burnley pressure, final day

The point against Brighton gives Leeds a fighting chance to stay up this season. While their fate is out of their control should Burnley win their two final remaining games, that is certainly not a guarantee.

Recent results have been poor, discipline has been shocking and there has been little to nothing in terms of attacking threat lately. However, against Brighton, Leeds fought, scrapped and battled their way to a point. They did not shy away and they showed belief, something that Marsch stressed to them they needed to show at half-time.
