Leeds United news as Whites complete signing of young Celtic goalkeeper and police release statement

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Tuesday, 13 September 2022.

Mahady

Leeds United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Rory Mahady after his departure from Celtic. Mahady has put pen-to-paper on a two-year scholarship and will initially link up with the club’s Under-18s side.

According to Football Scotland in May, Leeds were battling Manchester City and Tottenham for his signature. The 16-year-old officially confirmed his departure from Celtic via his Instagram on Sunday ahead of a move to Leeds.

He said: "Today I have officially left Celtic. Just want to say a massive thank you to the players and staff for the last nine years. It was a pleasure, wishing everyone the best of luck for the future."

Police statement

Greater Manchester Police Chief Inspector Nicholas Hill has issued a statement to further elaborate upon Manchester United's postponed game with Leeds United. The Whites had been penned in to face Erik ten Hag's side at Old Trafford this weekend, however due to police shortages ahead of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, the game has been postponed.

Football across the country stood still last weekend as a mark of respect for Her Majesty and the Premier League had been scheduled to return this weekend. Jesse Marsch's side will now have to fit in both the upcoming cancellation against Manchester United and last weekend's clash with Nottingham Forest into an already hectic diary.

Chief Inspector Nicholas Hill, of GMP’s Specialist Operations Planning Unit, said: “Greater Manchester Police is supporting forces across the United Kingdom in keeping people safe at locations and events of high-significance following the passing of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We have plans in place to ensure we can provide this support whilst effectively serving our own communities.

“We are also working with partner agencies to consider the viability of un-related but exceptionally large events in Greater Manchester. This includes the Manchester United vs. Leeds fixture, which has been postponed with the support of the Safety Advisory Group and the club.”

Meslier

Leeds United’s Illan Meslier has been named the fifth most ‘impactful’ goalkeeper in Europe under the age of 25. That is according to CIES Football Observatory, who calculate an impact score ‘taking into consideration the average match level in which players participated according to the experience capital method, official game minutes played over the last 365 days, as well as pitch performance compared to both teammates, opponents and same profile’s players.’

Meslier has been calculated a score of 84.5, which puts him behind only Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal, Gregor Kobel of Borrusia Dortmund, Diogo Costa of FC Porto, and Gianluigi Donnarumma of PSG. Ramsdale currently leads the way with a score of 90.6 thanks to an excellent 12 months at the Emirates following his move from Sheffield United.
