A look at the latest Leeds United headlines on Monday, 16 January.
Vincent Kompany hails Leeds United target
Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has hailed Coventry City striker Vikto Gyokeres as one of the best strikers in the Championship, despite the Sky Blues 1-0 defeat to the Clarets. The Swedish striker is being linked with a £12-15m exit from Coventry this season, with the likes of Leeds United, Wolves and Everton reportedly interested in him.
Speaking to Lancs Live, Kompany kept his cards close to his chest in terms of interest in the striker but hailed the Swede’s ability as one of the leading strikers in the division. He said: "In my opinion, and it's not make an assumption, it is a neutral opinion of someone who watches his football, but he showed everything today of what he is.
"We have a backline that is usually really aggressive and able to recover the ball on the first moment of impact and with him it takes you two, three or even four times and even runs the ball down into the corner. Even then he is able to square you up and create threat towards goal. His final balls are good, not just where he has to shoot but how he brings other players into the game."
Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto 'looks like a Man City winger' admits starstruck Gary Neville
Gary Neville has called Wilfried Gnonto a “Manchester City winger” after his dazzling performance against Aston Villa. As has often been the case in recent times, the youngster was the only shining light from an otherwise dismal result.
His involvement in Patrick Bamford’s consolation saw him earn demonstrated exactly why he has turned heads this season. It is scary to think Gnonto only made his Premier League debut on October 29 as he is now one of the first names on Jesse Marsch’s team sheet.
Signed from FC Zurich for a pittance, few expected the forward - despite his eight caps for Italy - to have such an impact this season. A five-year contract signed last summer means Leeds could demand a sizable fee should a Premier League rival express interest.
Glen Johnson gives seal of approval to Leeds United's Illan Meslier's Chelsea links
Glen Johnson has revealed that he'd 'like' to see Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier sign for Chelsea. Meslier has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months, including Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Chelsea are also reportedly in the race for the 22-year-old, who has been undisputed number one at Elland Road since Leeds achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2020.
The Blues have switched goalkeepers this season with Kepa Arrizabalaga replacing Edouard Mendy as the first-choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge in recent months.
Predicted Leeds United U21s line-up as strong side expected for West Brom clash
Leeds United U21s return to action this evening as they take on West Bromwich Albion at York’s LNER Community Stadium. Michael Skubala’s Whites will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after suffering their first league defeat of the season last time out at Nottingham Forest.
The Whites sat six points clear going into that game with Forest, but Southampton’s wins over Derby County and Newcastle United mean United are now second in the Premier League 2 Division 2 table. A result tonight will see them reclaim top spot, though, and they’ll fancy their chances against the Baggies, who currently sit in fifth.
With Jesse Marsch expected to make a few first-team changes for the FA Cup replay against Cardiff City, it’s hard to know who will be available for the U21s this evening, but we’re still expecting a strong line-up. Kristoffer Klaesson seems to be comfortably behind Joel Robles and Illan Meslier in the pecking order at present and therefore he could pick up some minutes this evening in York.
