Leeds United news as Victor Orta delivers 'big six' transfer admission

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Sunday, June 26.

Orta makes ‘Big Six’ transfer admission

If nothing else, Manchester City’s pursuit of Kalvin Phillips shows their preference for Premier League-proven players rather than risky signings from further afar. They did the same when they smashed their transfer record to bring Jack Grealish to the club from Aston Villa last year.

Speaking to Marca in Spain, Victor Orta delivered his opinion on why Man City and their rivals at the top of the table are choosing to spend their money domestically. He said: “Right now I feel like the greats in England are more focused on home market players.

“I have a feeling some expensive failed signings from outside England caused a little mental trauma and all the big guys are reviewing their processes.”

Minto worried for Leeds fan after Phillips agreement

Leeds supporters will be gutted when they see Man City officially announce the arrival of Phillips despite already being resigned to his potential departure this summer. That feeling – whilst not quite as extreme – will be similar if Raphinha is sold before the end of the transfer window.

Former West Ham and Chelsea defender Scott Minto believes there is reason to be concerned at Elland Road, especially if the Brazilian follows Phillips out the exit door. He told talkSPORT: “They just about stayed up, Leeds. But if you’re going to let Kalvin Phillips go, you need to get good money for him and if you let Raphinha go, which obviously we don’t know if that’s going to happen, £100m between the two if they get it, on the face of it that’s good money.

“Patrick Bamford coming back will be key, but is there a guarantee that he’ll be as good as he was in the first season? There’s no guarantee, but even if you think he would be, Leeds are still massively depleted.

“What you then do with that money is absolutely crucial. At this moment in time, if I was a Leeds fan, I’d worry.”

Winterburn weighs in on Arsenal’s Raphinha interest

Arsenal continue to be one of the sides most heavily linked with a move for Raphinha this summer. They have reportedly already lodged a bid for the 25-year-old but were rebuffed immediately because their offer fell some way beneath Leeds’ valuation.

Nigel Winterburn has been impressed by the Whites star but is unsure whether he is the player that his former side need to prioritise this summer. He said: "It'll be interesting to see if that transfer comes off or not. It's a lot of money.

"Arsenal have players in that position. Yes, we can all agree that we need to strengthen and add quite a few players this summer. Whether we'll add enough players, we'll have to see.

"But Raphinha is a player I like, he's exciting, he's good on the ball, he's quick. But we need to look at where he'd fit into the picture in terms of other players we're looking at and whether that money would be better spent somewhere else before going on him.”
