A look at the latest Leeds United headlines on Tuesday, February 14.
Leeds United 'relegation clause inserted' into 49ers takeover deal
Football Insider claims 49ers Enterprises have factored in the prospect of a Leeds United relegation when entering talks with Andrea Radrizzani over a set fee for the club. The American franchise has long been touted with a full takeover at Elland Road, having increased their stake in the club to 44 per cent.
The report claims the two parties have a deal in place to hand over full control to the Americans with a deadline of January 2024. However, a deal could be completed prior to the start of next season, according to the report.
Regardless of what division the Whites are in next year, a takeover is expected to go through with the 49ers, but it may have some baring on the final figure the club is sold for.
'No doubts' over Weston McKennie's ability to be huge player for Leeds United
Current interim United States Men's National Team boss Anthony Hudson has no doubts over Weston McKennie's ability to succeed at Leeds United. The USA international arrived at the club last month on a season-long loan and has already made a good impression on the Whites faithful.
The midfielder's relationship with Tyler Adams in the heart of midfield attracted plenty of plaudits at the World Cup in Qatar earlier this season and Jesse Marsch was keen to add McKennie to his roster. However, with Marsch relieved of his duties, the duo will have to flourish in his absence.
The Whites have not won in the Premier League since a 4-3 win over Bournemouth - prior to the winter break for the World Cup. Leeds have strengthened with the arrival of Mckennie, Max Wober and Georginio Rutter, but they're yet to see any rewards.
Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt sent 'Mitrovic' message by Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray
Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has told Joe Gelhardt to look at how Aleksandar Mitrovic plays as a striker and to "be like that", as the Leeds United loanee looks for his first Black Cats goal.
Gelhardt is spending the remainder of this campaign at the Stadium of Light leading the line for Sunderland. The 20-year-old is the club's only recognised centre-forward following an injury to top scorer Ross Stewart, and Mowbray is looking for the youngster to step up and spearhead their attack.
Sunderland sit 7th in the Championship, but should they win their game in hand on Watford above them, they will find themselves in the play-off places. Gelhardt will undoubtedly have a vital role to play in their charge and Mowbray has called on the Leeds star to add more to his game than simply looking for balls in behind the defence as the striker searches for his first goal for the club.
Sean Dyche gives Dominic Calvert-Lewin update ahead of Everton vs Leeds United
Everton manager Sean Dyche has admitted that he has a "tough call" to make on Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fitness ahead of Leeds United's trip to Goodison Park in the Premier League this weekend.
Calvert-Lewin was absent from the Everton squad that lost 2-0 to Liverpool on Monday night. After impressing during the Toffees' 1-0 victory over league-leaders Arsenal, the 25-year-old was ruled out of the Merseyside derby with a hamstring problem.
Youngster Ellis Simms led the line at Anfield in his stead, with former Brighton man Neal Maupay coming on as a substitute in the second-half. Leeds would have been keeping a close eye on the match ahead of Saturday's six-pointer, with the Whites knowing that a win would see them move four points clear of Everton.
Jesse Marsch 'motivated' to relegate Leeds United at Southampton claims Simon Jordan
Simon Jordan has claimed that former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch will have "no greater motivation" at Southampton than getting the Saints out of the relegation zone out the Whites' expense.
Marsch is reportedly on the brink of becoming the new Southampton manager following his sacking at Leeds last week. The American appears to be wasting no time as he looks to spearhead the south coast club's attempt to avoid the drop.
Leeds are still searching for their new manager following the American's departure as they look to turn around a poor run of form that has left them without a Premier League victory since November.
Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch set for imminent Elland Road return with Southampton
Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch will be back at Elland Road in less than two weeks' time, should he be confirmed as Southampton's new manager.
Marsch is set to replace Nathan Jones as Southampton manager, according to reports from the Athletic, as the Saints waste no time in finding a replacement for the Welshman. A three month spell at St Mary's saw the 49-year-old only win one match as he leaves the club bottom of the league.
Leeds meanwhile are still waiting for a new head coach after Marsch left Elland Road just shy of having spent 12 months in charge. The American had only won one Premier League game since November - a 4-3 win vs Bournemouth - coming more than three months ago.
Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch 'set to replace' Nathan Jones as Southampton manager
Former Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch is reportedly 'set to replace' Nathan Jones as Southampton manager.
According to the Athletic, Marsch is on the brink of becoming the new boss at the south coast club following Jones' dismissal last week. They report that the American held an initial round of talks with the Saints on Monday, where both parties discussed the length of a potential contract.
It is also thought that both Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were considered for the position, with the south coast team eventually opting for the former Leeds man. Should Southampton confirm the appointment, it would see Marsch return to the Premier League just over a week after leaving his position at Elland Road.
Diogo Monteiro makes promising start to Leeds United life with commanding U21s bow
Diogo Monteiro seemed to enjoy his first taste of football in a Leeds United shirt on Monday evening. The defender had to wait two weeks for the chance to pull on the colours of his new club, having joined from Swiss Super League outfit Servette on transfer deadline day, but he produced a fine performance as the Under-21s drew 2-2 with Newcastle United a Whitley Park.
The addition of Monteiro was perhaps overshadowed by other dealings at the time, but there was still an excitement from supporters to welcome the 18-year-old to the club, particularly after seeing Wilfried Gnonto excel in such a way after making the move at the same age from the same league. Gnonto was already an Italian international when he made the switch, making direct comparisons between the two a little unfair.
However, the club have high hopes that the Portugal youth international will be able to follow in his footsteps and make the jump into the first-team down the line and he did little to suggest Leeds' faith is misplaced during his first run out for the club. He will have been buoyed by the experience of watching Leeds’ Premier League defeat to Manchester United from the bench, even if he didn’t get on, and he portrayed a picture of confidence as the Whites travelled to Northumberland.
