Leeds United news as Paul Robinson claims Whites player could 'challenge' Spurs man at World Cup

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines on Wednesday, November 23.

Paul Robinson claims Leeds United player should be at World Cup over West Ham man

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has said that current Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier should be at the World Cup this year to give Tottenham Hotspur's Hugo Lloris some competition.

Meslier has proven his worth for the Whites over the last few seasons and is thought to be France's future number one goalkeeper after captaining their Under-21s.

However, the 21-year-old is yet to find a single senior cap for the French and was once again overlooked by Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps for this month's tournament.

Speaking to Sports Astra, Robinson highlighted two players that Meslier should be included over, in particular over a West Ham rival.

"I look at the two goalkeepers on the bench; [Alphonse] Areola and [Steve] Mandanda. Lloris has got no competition in that squad whatsoever. Those two goalkeepers are not good enough to challenge him.

"For me, Meslier at Leeds should be in that squad. He’s good enough. Areola has hardly played this season, Meslier could come in, he would challenge Lloris as a number one I think."

Leeds United linked with La Liga striker following World Cup selection

Leeds United could reportedly turn to Villarreal and Senegal striker Boulaye Dia in a bid to boost their striker ranks. With first-choice forward Patrick Bamford having failed to score in the Premier League this season amid injury concerns, the goalscoring burden has fallen upon Rodrigo's shoulders at Elland Road.

Despite boasting an impressive record of nine goals in just 13 league outings, the Spaniard is not considered an out-and-out striker and is likely to require support in attack across the second half of the campaign if the Whites are to maintain their threat in front of goal.

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams' 'intimidation' warning ahead of USA v England showdown

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams has warned Gareth Southgate that his USA side "are not intimidated" by England despite the Three Lions' thumping 6-2 win over Iran.

Adams became the youngest player to captain the Stars and Stripes in a World Cup match since 1950 when he led Gregg Berhalter's side out in their 1-1 draw against Wales on Monday. The States went ahead through Tim Weah's opener but were eventually pegged back thanks to a Gareth Bale penalty.

Meanwhile, England began their campaign in emphatic fashion after goals from Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish took Southgate's men to the top of Group B.
