Leeds United news as Michael Owen stokes VAR 'debate' flames amid 'no huge problem' claim

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines on Monday, March 20.

Michael Owen's 'no huge problem' claim after VAR complaints in Leeds United win

Former Premier League star Michael Owen has claimed that VAR's decision to hand Wolves defender Jonny a red card for his challenge on Leeds United defender Luke Ayling over the weekend was 'the perfect use' of the system despite a questionable call at the end of the match.

Referee Michael Salisbury initially handed the left-back a yellow card before VAR intervened and upgraded it to a red card, leaving Wolves with just 10 men.

After the game, there were numerous complaints from the home side about the use of the system, but Owen believes that the right decision was made in this instance.

"Certainly VAR was working perfectly, in terms of changing from a yellow to a red card (for Otto)," he said on Premier League Productions' MatchDay Extra.

However, the former England international then went on to claim that although he believes that Adam Traore's call for a foul in the build-up to Rodrigo's fourth goal in added time was warranted, it's not big enough to be game-changing.

"I think there will be debate about the foul, for the fourth goal. There is definitely a shirt pull. Whether or not it’s enough – the referee has gone to the screen, he has been able to see the shirt pull, but he has probably thought ‘you know what it’s not enough’.

"I have got no huge problem with that."

Supercomputer's Leeds United's relegation prediction shifts after Wolves triumph

The FiveThirtyEight supercomputer's latest predicted is forecasting that Leeds United will escape relegation from Premier League after the Whites secured a much-needed Premier League win over relegation rivals Wolves.

Jack Harrison put the visitors ahead after just six minutes before Luke Ayling netted his first goal in exactly a year, which also came at Molineux, to double Leeds' advantage.

Rasmus Kristensen appeared to have put the game beyond doubt by netting his first goal in English football, with Leeds assuming a 3-0 lead.

Archie Gray sends out timely reminder after Leeds United's show of faith

It didn’t take Archie Gray long to give a reminder of his abilities to those present at Elland Road on Sunday as Leeds United U21s took on Sunderland. Collecting the ball on the edge of his own box, Gray smoothly manoeuvred his way around a couple of Black Cats players with some slick footwork before combining neatly with his midfield partner Darko Gyabi to carry Leeds up the pitch.

It was only a minor moment in the contest, but it earned a round of applause from the West Stand crowd, who were clearly delighted to see Gray show just a glimpse of the talent he possesses at his fingertips. It’s fair to say this season has been a challenging one for the 17-year-old, who would have hoped to kick on and establish himself at his boyhood club.

An unfortunate accident at home in September left him with a broken toe and that injury highlighted another issue that has kept him on the sidelines since. As such, Sunday’s Premier League 2 Division 2 outing represented his first start in six months and his return could be a timely one.
