Leeds United news as Mateusz Klich performance recognised, Marsch's pre-Brighton injury update

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Thursday, 25 August 2022.

Klich recognised

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich has been named in the Carabao Cup team of the week for his performance in the 3-1 over Barnsley. Klich was the star of the show for the Whites as he netted two goals to help Jesse Marsch’s side into the third round.

The 32-year-old was making his first start of the season and scored his first of the evening from the penalty spot. In trademark Klich fashion he then found the top corner with a précised curling effort into the top corner to put the game beyond doubt.

Marsch on injuries

Jesse Marsch has revealed that both Junior Firpo and Luke Ayling are expected to restart training with Leeds United next week. The pair have missed the opening three games of the Premier League season, but fans may not have to wait too much longer before seeing them in the Whites' match day squad once more.

Ayling has been missing since the end of last season after undergoing surgery on a knee issue and consequently missing the entirety of pre-season, while Firpo picked up an injury in the friendly win over Blackpool and hasn’t been seen since. Marsch also hopes to see Mateusz Bogusz restart training this week after overcoming the knee injury he picked up on loan last season.

However, the head coach doesn’t know if Patrick Bamford will be fit enough to be involved this weekend at Brighton and Hove Albion. Bamford picked up a groin issue against Southampton and given his recent injury record, the club are keen to avoid rushing him back into the action.

Phillips, Raphinha reunite

Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha shared a nice reunion on the pitch at Camp Nou on Wednesday following the mid-season friendly between Barcelona and Manchester City. The two clubs organised the one-off match in order to raise money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable neurodegenerative disease.

Both Phillips and Raphinha started the game, with the former playing around 55 minutes before going off with a shoulder injury, and the latter getting 75 minutes of action. It was the first time the two players will have seen each other since the end of last season, when both played key roles in helping Leeds narrowly avoid relegation.
