Here are this morning's latest Leeds United headlines on Tuesday, May 16.
Marcelo Bielsa confirmed as Uruguay boss
Former Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa has been confirmed as the new boss of the Uruguay national team, as he returns to football management for the first time since his Elland Road departure in February 2022.
The 67-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal running until the 2026 World Cup, with the South American qualifiers beginning in September, with La Celeste beginning their campaign against Chile, another of Bielsa's former sides.
Bielsa will be unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday in Montevideo and his appointment comes after he held talks with both Everton and Bournemouth earlier this season for their previously-vacant managerial positions.
Bielsa's first games in the Uruguay dugout will be a doubleheader next month against Nicaragua and Cuba at the Centenario Stadium.
U21s coach on U21s stars' future after playoff final win
Michal Pujdak believes Leeds United Under-21s are ‘back where they belong’ after securing promotion to Premier League 2 Division 1 on Monday night. The young Whites cruised to victory in their play-off final against Nottingham Forest at Elland Road, winning 3-0 in front of crowd of 12,632 and that was enough to reclaim their spot in the top flight at the first time of asking.
Club record signing Georginio Rutter was the man that put United ahead as he made the most of a dominant start to score his first goal in the white of Leeds, poking skipper Mateo Joseph’s cross home. Jeremiah Mullen doubled the lead with a goal of the season contender, finding the bottom corner of the net with an audacious volley from a relatively tight angle.
Kris Moore wrapped it up for Leeds with a powerful header in the second half, ensuring the U21s brought a fitting end to what has been a memorable season in West Yorkshire.
Liverpool hand Leeds United Premier League survival boost
Leeds United's hopes of Premier League survival were handed a timely boost as Liverpool defeated Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium.
Leicester were the last of the relegation-threatened sides to play in this round of games, but were unable to do their chances any good as Jurgen Klopp's Reds cruised to victory. After a tight opening spell, the visitors took control with two quickfire goals from midfielder Curtis Jones.
The hosts switched to a more attacking formation in the second period, but rarely threatened Alisson in the Liverpool goal. And while Dean Smith's men tried to close the defecit, it was the visitors who extended their leads thans to Trent Alexander-Arnold's well-taken free-kick.
