Leeds United news as Kalvin Phillips make World Cup debut, Jesse Marsch hails Tyler Adams

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines for Wednesday, November 30.

Ex-Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips makes World Cup debut

Former Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips starred for England as they secured top spot in Group B with a 3-0 victory over fierce rivals Wales on Tuesday. Phillips replaced Declan Rice in the 57th minute to make his World Cup debut and even had a hand in the third goal.

Marcus Rashford latched onto his floating ball over the top to tiptoe his way inside and crash a ferocious finish beyond Danny Ward. It was the first minutes that Phillips has played since sustaining a shoulder injury in September.

The 26-year-old has struggled for playing time since completing his £45 million switch from Leeds to Manchester City in the summer. He has accumulated just 53 minutes of action across all competitions for the reigning champions and missed 11 games due to his recent injury.

Phillips, who made 234 appearances for his hometown club Leeds, was named England Men's Player of the Year in 2021 following his impressive performance at Euro 2020. The midfielder started every game as the Three Lions reached the European Championship final for the first time in their history.

As a result of finishing at the summit of Group B, England will face a tricky Round of 16 tie against Group A runners-up Senegal on Sunday.

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch hails 'underestimated' Tyler Adams quality

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has revealed he knew Tyler Adams would be a "special" player after seeing him play as a 15-year-old during his time at New York Red Bulls. Adams and Marsch reunited this summer at Elland Road having previously been together in New York and at RB Leipzig.

While he may only be a few months into his Leeds career, Adams has shown plenty of promise following his arrival from Germany for £20m. The 23-year-old has formed a strong partnership in central midfield with Spaniard Marc Roca, who also joined Leeds in the summer.

Adams has brought a high level of intensity and energy to Leeds engine room, which has endeared him to plenty of Whites supporters. He has also impressed on the global stage too recently, producing a number of impressive displays for the USA at the World Cup. Leeds have found a real gem in Adams who still has plenty of time to develop further.

Ronald de Boer hits back at 'funny' PSV criticism for not selling Cody Gakpo to Leeds United

Former Netherlands legend Ronald de Boer has called the criticism PSV Eindhoven received for not selling Cody Gakpo last summer 'funny' given his recent World Cup heroics.

The Dutch forward, who Leeds United were heavily interested in, has been one of the stars of the tournament so far, bagging three goals in three games for the Netherlands.

With Gakpo leading the charge, Louis van Gaal's side have qualified as the winners of Group A. Having starting the season in rampant form, which has carried over to the World Cup, speculation around his future is increasing.
