Leeds United news as Josh Warrington emulates Luke Ayling after becoming world champion

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Sunday, 27 March 2022.

Warrington emulates Ayling

Boxer Josh Warrington emulated the celebration of Leeds United defender Luke Ayling after he stopped Kiko Martinez in round seven to become world champion for the second time. Warrington performed the 'Robbie Keane celebration' in the ring after the referee brought a halt to proceedings, just like Ayling did eight days prior following his late winner at Wolves.

Warrington walked out alongside Ayling at the First Direct Arena on Saturday evening before reclaiming his IBF featherweight title. The likes of Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips were also present ringside to watch the Leeds Warrior get back to winning ways.

Bielsa tribute

When Marcelo Bielsa was relieved of his duties as Leeds United manager, the club were aware of the sentimental feelings of the fan base toward the Argentinian manager. In the statement announcing Bielsa leaving the club, it was stated: "Plans for a permanent tribute to Marcelo at Elland Road are under way and more information will be released in due course."

According to a picture shared on Twitter, this tribute could be what appears to be a marble version of Bielsa's famous 'bucket' which he used to sit on during games. The picture shows the club crest and the quote 'a man with new ideas is a mad man, until his ideas triumph'. This is a famous quote of Bielsa's and is also featured on the mural of him in the city.

Phillips’ role assessed

Kalvin Phillips’ return to first-team action, after almost four months on the sidelines, is a welcome sight for everyone involved at Leeds United. No one at Elland Road enjoyed a more meteoric rise under Marcelo Bielsa than Phillips.

Phillips was the lynchpin for the team to form around, as he established himself as one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League as the Whites’ single pivot. However, as the 26-year-old is set to return to first-team action Bielsa and the single-pivot are gone. Jesse Marsch has only been in charge for four games but is wedded to the 4–2–2–2 system used throughout the Red Bull teams, meaning that Phillips will have to work alongside another central midfielder and share both attacking and defensive burden equally.
