Leeds United news as Jesse Marsch explains Robin Koch decision and the relegation picture analysed

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines on Friday, March 11.

Marsch explains Koch role

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has explained why he stuck with Robin Koch in central midfield, rather than using him in his more natural centre-back position in the 3-0 loss against Aston Villa.

The German international started the defeat at Leicester City in the same position and didn't put a foot wrong, but there were calls for Marsch to revert Koch back to the centre of defence.

Marsch decided to stay with the same system, with Luke Ayling at centre-back and Stuart Dallas at right-back, but it didn't pay off as goals from Phillipe Coutinho, Matty Cash and Callum Chambers sealed the win for Villa.

When asked about Koch's position, Marsch said: "I know he's more of a centre back by trade, but I think he's tactically very aware. And I think his understanding of what that role is, I thought he executed really, really well against Leicester.

"In general, I thought Robin could have been more aggressive in certain moments certainly try to pressure the opponent but, you know, I thought that he was actually one of the better players on the day, we'll have to evaluate exactly what we do for Sunday and see physically who's ready to recover and perform again.

"So yeah, that'll play a factor clearly in the line of decisions for Sunday."

The relegation picture

Leeds United did their hopes of Premier League survival no favours as they were comfortably beaten by Aston Villa at Elland Road.

The gap to the relegation zone remains two points but Burnley and Everton in the places directly below have two and three games in hand respectively.

It makes the clash with Norwich at Elland Road even more important on Sunday as anything less than victory will be unacceptable.

It is a game that Jesse Marsch compared to a cup final after the Villa defeat and three points are more essential than they have ever been.

Luckily for Leeds, the Canaries also were also dealt a blow in their fight for survival this evening as they were beaten 3-1 by Chelsea at Carrow Road.

They are four points adrift of safety which is bizarre in itself given they have only won four games all season.

The team above Norwich were also on the end of a heavy defeat tonight as Watford, who are two points from safety themselves, were hammered 4-0 by Wolves at Molineux.

Morrison hails 'unbelievable' Raphinha

Former Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison has hailed Raphinha despite Leeds United's defeat against Aston Villa on Thursday night.

The 25-year-old had a relatively quiet game but Morrison has still been mightily impressed with his impact since joining the club from Rennes.

He told Sky Sports: "If Leeds are going to score it is going to come from this right-hand side.

"He is unbelievable."

It proved to be a frustrating evening for the Whites, who didn't pose as much of an attacking threat as they did against Leicester City, lacking that cutting edge in the final third.

Raphinha was someone who struggled to get into the game, failing to record a shot on goal while getting himself booked in the meantime.

The result leaves Leeds in major danger at the bottom of the division.
