Leeds United news as Jack Wilshere admits Arsenal Raphinha frustration

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Sunday, July 3.

Wilshere ‘gutted’ Arsenal will miss out on Raphinha

Arsenal were one of the clubs being most heavily linked with a move for Raphinha this summer. However, they look set to be outgunned by either Chelsea or Barcelona with the Leeds star seemingly on his way out of Elland Road.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jack Wilshere was asked if he was gutted by his former side missing out on the Brazilian. He replied: “I am. I can definitely see the Barca one for a Brazilian.

"Neymar played there, Ronaldinho. I would love him to come to Arsenal because I think he's a great player. Unfortunately it doesn't look like he will."

Whites in offer for historic sports ground

The TV Harrison Sports Ground in Wortley is the subject of social housing development having been misused for decades. It is the former home of Leeds City Boys football club where players such as David Batty, Brian Deane, Paul Madeley and Paul Reeney were scouted in years gone by.

Planning applications have been submitted regarding the building of 60 new homes on the site however former MP Michael Meadowcroft has suggested the Whites have offered to buy the ground. He told the Yorkshire Evening Post : “The news of Leeds United’s offer to buy the TV Harrison Sports Ground is a game changer and a terrific boost for the campaign to safeguard this historic sports ground.

“Our association will be delighted to work alongside Leeds United in whatever plans the club has for safeguarding and developing Wortley’s historic sports ground. Leeds United has always looked out for talented local players and the TV Harrison Sports Ground was invariably on the list of grounds to be visited by its scouts.”

Gibson urges Leeds to bolster ‘small squad’

One of the reasons supporters felt Leeds almost fell short last season was the lack of genuine strength-in-depth throughout the squad. The injury crisis severely threatened their Premier League status and Terry Gibson believes the money raised by the sales of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha should be spent on padding out the squad.

“The big criticism of Leeds from their supporters last season was that they had such a small squad,” he said on the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast. “So in order to bolster the squad, they clearly will have to sell some of their main assets.

“With the money they get for Raphinha, if he goes, and the money they get from Phillips if he goes, I would imagine Leeds will probably be looking at bringing in about half a dozen players as opposed to the two that are leaving.

“The effort they had to put in, particularly when Bielsa was manager, took its toll. I think they do need a much bigger squad than they carried last season and this is one way to do it.”
