Wilfried Gnonto gives Leeds United supporters a flavour of what's to come in U21s bow

On the night he received his latest call-up to play in Azzurri blue, Wilfried Gnonto was starring in Leeds white.

The forward, fresh from his Golden Boy nomination, was making his first appearance for the club he joined on transfer deadline day as Leeds United Under-21s saw off Southampton 6-2 at Elland Road.

It was a star-studded line-up, with the likes of Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper, Crysencio Summerville, Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo all involved.

The forward didn’t find the joy his attack-minded team-mates did in the game, with Bamford bagging a hat-trick in the Premier League 2 Division 2 clash, while Summerville notched up three assists, won a penalty and found the back of the net.

However, Gnonto caught the eye in his own right with his direct running and obvious ability with the ball, which was enough to petrify Southampton’s right-back Lewis Payne.

With Forest leaking goals at an alarming rate, it looked as though Leeds would be playing them at just the right time.

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford was delighted to get more minutes in his legs against Southampton's Under 21s as the Whites Under 21s cruised home to a 6-2 win at Elland Road.

The England international is still finding his way back to full fitness this term but managed to bag himself a hat-trick against the Saints on Friday night.

"I think it was good for us first team players to get the minutes in because we've obviously missed a few games and then the games got cancelled unfortunately," said Bamford in the aftermath of the 6-2 win.
