Illan Meslier opens up on Georginio Rutter childhood 'connection'
Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has spoken about how he's known the Whites' newest signing Georginio Rutter for over 10 years after growing up together.
The 20-year-old striker arrived at Elland Road from Hoffenheim last week and the pair have come up through the French national team youth setup together over the years, having shared the pitch in the Under-21s team.
"He is a very good lad," Meslier told LUTV. "I've known him since I was 12 because we are more or less from the same place, 30 minutes from each other.
"He came for a few tournaments to Lorient, my hometown, and I saw him go to different clubs, finish in the academy of Rennes and take his flight to Hoffenheim.
"I know him very well. He asked me how the club was and I explained everything and I think he took the right decision.
"I am sure that he will be great and important for us."
Georginio Rutter's Leeds United vow as he looks to repay club's record-breaking faith in him
Georginio Rutter has vowed to 'repay the confidence' shown in him by the club, after becoming Leeds United's club record signing.
The forward joined the Whites from Hoffenheim for a fee that could rise to £35 million in add-ons earlier this month. Rutter penned a five-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road, and is in contention to make his debut against Brentford on Sunday.
He was ineligible to make his Leeds bow in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over Cardiff City at Elland Road, as the Whites booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round.
Rutter provided 11 goals and eight assists during his two-year spell in the Bundesliga, and is determined to show his worth in the Premier League at Leeds.
Steven Gerrard highlights top-flight 'pressure' Leeds United and Jesse Marsch will be familiar with
Jesse March's seat in the Leeds United dugout has become quite hot over the last few months with fans and pundits alike discussing his time at Elland Road so far.
The Whites currently sit in 14th, having taken 17 points from their opening 18 matches, and go into tomorrow's clash against Brentford with just two wins in their last seven matches.
However, Marsch has seen a significant improvement in performances, despite his players have been unable to conjure up results in the league.
It means that although players like Willy Gnonto, who are fan favourites, have been popping up with goals, the American hasn't heard the end of what seems to be a vocal bunch of fans that have been calling for him to be sacked.
