Gary Neville agrees with Piers Morgan over Leeds vs Nottingham Forest postponement
Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has joined Piers Morgan in believing sporting events should go ahead after they were postponed this weekend. Leeds were due to play Forest on Monday evening but following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the FA postponed all levels of football while other sport went ahead this weekend.
As the country enters a period of national mourning, games against Fulham and Manchester United remain in doubt as to whether they'll be played but following the Queen's funeral being confirmed to be a bank holiday, both games could go ahead.
Following the postponements, Morgan took to Twitter to question the postponement. He tweeted: "Sporting events should go ahead. a) The Queen loved sport, and b) It would be great to see/hear huge crowds singing the National Anthem to Her Majesty, as West Ham fans did so magnificently (on Thursday) night."
Neville was quick to back Morgan's comments. He tweeted: "I agree Piers. Sport can demonstrate better than most the respect the Queen deserves."
Leeds United's early form showing Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher's transfer doubts unfounded
The 2022/23 season has gone quite well for Leeds United compared to last season - while they never made it higher than 15th, Jesse Marsch's men currently sit in ninth after their first six games.
Wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea and draws against Everton and Southampton have seen them take eight points so far this season but could potentially have to wait up to a month for their next game after the postponement of Monday's fixture against Nottingham Forest.
However, many pundits predicted a much worse start to the season - and a bad season overall - for the Whites after their campaign last year. Here's what some of them said...
Manchester United vs Leeds United could get green light as Queen's funeral detail confirmed
Leeds United’s trip to Manchester United on Sunday could be played next weekend as the date for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral has been confirmed as a bank holiday for the country. All football matches across the Premier League and EFL between September 9-11 were cancelled after The Queen passed away aged 96 on Thursday.
Despite some reports indicating next weekend’s action could also be in doubt, Premier League action could get back underway from Friday with The Queen's funeral set to take place on Monday, September 19. King Charles III confirmed at his proclamation that the funeral would be marked by a Bank Holiday for the country, indicating that it is likely to take place on the Monday.
The funeral, which could have been held on Sunday, would have clashed with Leeds’ trip to Old Trafford. With the dates of the two events not set to clash, there is more chance that the games will be played over the weekend.
