Leeds United news as former Whites midfielder does it again and James opens up on his new role

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Saturday, 5 February 2022.

Howson does it again

Former Leeds United midfielder Jonny Howson inflicted embarrassment on Manchester United yet again by knocking them out of the FA Cup fourth round with Middlesbrough.

Boro held firm against Premier League opposition to earn a 1-1 draw and take the game all the way to penalties.

Howson, as well as other ex-Leeds men Sol Bamba and Lee Peltier, expertly converted their spot-kicks, to defeat the Red Devils 8-7.

The 33-year-old celebrated the scoring of his penalty right in front of the Stretford End and 12 years on from his FA Cup win at Old Trafford with League One Leeds, produced an excellent display.

Teesside Live said of Howson's performance: “Up against it against Pogba and needed more support in first half but disciplined and kept calm in the face of the waves of United attacks. Influence grew. What a penalty.”

James on striker role

Leeds United winger Daniel James has revealed he has enjoyed his recent appearances as a striker for the Whites.

James has often been tasked with filling the void left by the injured Patrick Bamford, with Joe Gelhardt, Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts all having been absent in recent matches too.

And while he does not see this as a long-term position, he feels it will aid his development as a player and also thinks it will help him when he returns on the wing.

He told BBC West Yorkshire Sport : "I think I've enjoyed it. It's not a position I see myself playing in the long-term, but with the injuries we have it's somewhere he [Bielsa] has seen I can play.

"It's not somewhere I have played before but I'm learning everyday and I need to learn all positions.

"I said before you can end up in any position up there at times and you've got to know what the striker or the winger is thinking.

"It has helped me a lot, especially when I play on the wing again and I now know what the No.9 thinks and what position to be in.”

Moyes’ transfer hint

West Ham United manager David Moyes has hinted his side could return for Leeds United pair Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha this summer.

The Hammers reportedly saw separate bids of £50 million rejected by Leeds for both of the key Whites duo as they looked to strengthen their squad during the latter stages of the January window.

Both players have also been linked with moves to some of Europe’s biggest clubs and so their interest in a move to the London Stadium is dubious, however West Ham boss Moyes has dropped a hint that his side may resurrect their pursuit in the summer.

Speaking to Football London, he said: “I’d never tell you my targets because that would be wrong, even the names you are mentioning I could not guarantee if you were correct or not.

“But what I do want to do is be ambitious here at West Ham. I want to bring in good players and I want to add to what I think is a really good squad, we are building on it. Sometimes, getting things you actually want, you have to wait a little bit longer.

“We were not able to get it this January window. But I think it was quite obvious to most clubs, as I said I think it was nine clubs who didn’t do any business in January, so it should be no surprise to a lot of people that we were one, but we did try very hard I have to say."
