Leeds United news as 'formal offer' to Marcelo Bielsa is made

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Thursday, May 5.

Bielsa continues to be linked with a return to management

After leaving Leeds at the end of February, Marcelo Bielsa continues to be reportedly inundated with job offers. National teams in South America, as well as club sides, are keen on tempting the 66-year-old back into management just a couple of months after his last job.

The latest team to be linked with bringing Bielsa to their technical area is Mexican side Guadalajara, according to Soy Chiva Hermano. They are said to be the first team to put a formal offer on the table while the rest have purely sounded the former Whites boss.

Incidentally, it is a club that has vague links to his successor, Jesse Marsch. He played for Guadalajara’s former subsidiary club, Chivas USA, in the MLS between 2006 and 2009 before he retired from playing.

Former Leeds midfielder sells Maradona shirt for record amount

Diego Maradona’s brace against England in the quarter-final of the 1986 World Cup is perhaps the most iconic pair of goals in football history. The infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal followed by one of the most mesmeric solo goals ever seen just four minutes later gave the Three Lions far too much to do to make the semi-final in Mexico.

Steve Hodge, who moved to Leeds five years after that tournament, swapped shirts with Maradona after the game and was the proud owner of it for over 35 years. However, he made the decision to part ways with the iconic number 10 shirt and it fetched an eye-watering £7.1m at auction at Sotheby’s yesterday.

When he made the decision to sell the shirt, Hodge said: "I have been the proud owner of this item for over 35 years, since Diego and I swapped shirts in the tunnel after the famed match. It was an absolute privilege to have played against one of the greatest and most magnificent football players of all time.

"It has also been a pleasure to share it with the public over the last 20 years at the National Football Museum, where it has been on display. The Hand of God shirt has deep cultural meaning to the football world, the people of Argentina, and the people of England, and I'm certain that the new owner will have immense pride in owning the world's most iconic football shirt."

Time for attacking change in last few games?

Joe Gelhardt turned 20 years old yesterday, highlighting just how young the Leeds forward is despite having a brilliant season at the top level this season. His appearances so far, which have largely come from the bench, have left Whites supporters calling for him to start up front in the absence of Patrick Bamford.

Dan James has often been the man trusted to make the difference in the number nine role but his impact has far too often been negligible. With the biggest four-game run coming up for Leeds since they returned to the Premier League, supporters have been asking the question of whether Gelhardt should be picked in the front line.
