Leeds United news as ex-Whites man Gordon Strachan backed for managerial return

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Friday, February 17.

Ex-Leeds man Gordon Strachan favourite to become Aberdeen boss

Ex-Leeds midfielder Gordon Strachan has emerged as the bookmakers' favourite to become the next manager of Aberdeen.

Strachan has not returned to management since resigning from his post as Scotland manager in October 2017. The 66-year-old previously managed Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic and Middlesbrough respectively.

Jim Goodwin was relieved of his duties at the end of January following a dismal run of results. Aberdeen lost six of their next eight league games after the World Cup break, including 5-0 and 6-0 thrashings at the hands of Hearts and Hibernian respectively.

They also suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat against sixth-tier Darvel in the Scottish Cup fourth round. Strachan is the favourite to replace Goodwin, with Bet Victor offering odds of 2/1.

Strachan enjoyed a decorated career at Aberdeen under Sir Alex Ferguson, before joining Manchester United. He joined Leeds in 1989 and scored 16 goals in 46 appearances to help propel them to the Second Division title in 1990, before going onto lift the First Division title in 1992.

The former Scotland international scored 44 goals in 235 appearances in total for the Whites, and rounded off his career with a spell at Coventry City.

Patrick Bamford shuts down claims he was critical of Jesse Marsch's Leeds United tactics

Patrick Bamford has shut down claims that he was critical of Jesse Marsch's tactics at Leeds United prior to the American's sacking earlier this month.

The Leeds forward vented his frustration about feeling isolated up front after their 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, which proved to be Marsch's last game at the helm.

Bamford told reporters in his post-match interview that he wanted more runners to support him and help create space, and those comments were perceived by some as being critical towards Marsch's game plan.

Harry Redknapp distances himself from Leeds United head coach talk but 'names price'

Harry Redknapp has taken the opportunity to distance himself from the vacant managerial position Leeds United. Reports earlier in the week claimed that Redknapp was ready to offer his expertise and knowledge to the Whites for the remainder of the Premier League season as the club continue their search for a new manager.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth boss has taken charge of over 1,300 games as a manager, with his last job coming in 2017 with Championship outfit Birmingham City. As such, his experience would be unmatched in the Premier League should he step back into management.

However, Redknapp has rubbished talk that a return could be on the cards at Leeds, who have been without a manager since dismissing Jesse Marsch on February 6 following their loss to Nottingham Forest. The Whites have made the decision to allow Under-21s boss Michael Skubala to hold the reins for the time being while the search for a permanent coach goes on and there has been no contact with Redknapp.
