Leeds United news as ex-Whites defender praises display of Liam Cooper in Aston Villa draw

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Monday, October 3.

Cooper hailed

Matthew Kilgallon has hailed the performance of Leeds United captain Liam Cooper in the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa. Cooper was making his first Premier League appearance of the season after a string of injury problems in the last few months.

Leeds were forced to battle hard for their point after Luis Sinisterra was shown a red card for a second bookable offence four minutes into the second half. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, ex-Whites defender Kilgallon claimed Cooper was ‘brilliant’ after such a long time out.

He said: “He was brilliant. He was brilliant, I was really impressed with him. Really, really good. The headers.

“It’s his leadership and everything about it. You come back in, he puts a performance in like that. He’s only going to get better hopefully with more games. He’ll probably be really sore tomorrow, stiff because he hasn’t played for a while.”

Gerrard praises ref

Steven Gerrard has praised referee Stuart Attwell for his performance in Leeds United and Aston Villa’s goalless draw while hitting out at Jesse Marsch’s opinion on the visitors’ time-wasting.

The Sunday-afternoon clash at Elland Road was marred by the frequent whistling of Attwell, who would ultimately send off Luis Sinisterra and end both halves with booing from all sides of the stadium. While Marsch, banned for his most recent referee altercation, would not even comment on the man in the middle, Gerrard was effusive in his praise.

“He had a good game,” said Gerrard. “Is there anything he got wrong? That’s a good game. If referees don’t get anything wrong it’s a good game, so well done to Stuart.”
