Leeds United news as Elland Road selected to host marquee England women's Euro 2022 warm-up

Here are the latest Leeds United headlines on Wednesday, March 9.

Elland Road due to host Lionesses

The England women's football team will play at Elland Road on 24 June, as the Lionesses face the Netherlands in a warm-up game for the European Championships this summer.

This will be the first time that Leeds have hosted the England women's team and it will be a difficult fixture for the home team, as their opponents are the holders of the European Championship.

England topped their qualifying group, winning all six games and scoring 53 goals without conceding a single time.

Bamford will 'for sure' feature against Aston Villa

Jesse Marsch was able to include Patrick Bamford in his first squad as Leeds United manager at Leicester City last weekend. However, the American was unable to call on Bamford as he had to use all three of his substitutes earlier than he would have liked and it was felt that the striker could only contribute ten minutes.

Speaking ahead of Thursday night's match against Aston Villa, Marsch said Bamford would 'for sure' play this time around.

"Patrick will play for sure tomorrow," said the Whites coach. "He won't start but he'll be ready from the bench and we're excited to have him back in the team and he'll give us a real boost."

The Leeds manager went into more detail on how the club were preparing to manage his return to the team, as well as referencing Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips, saying that he hoped to have both back in the team after the international break.

Aston Villa handed triple injury boost ahead of Elland Road clash

Meanwhile, Leeds' opponents have players returning from injury as well.

Steven Gerrard has stated that Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa and Carney Chukwuemeka are all ready to be involved, with the latter recovering from a knock which had caused him to miss the last two games and Digne and Konsa previously ruled out with Covid.

The Villa manager may have a selection decision to make as Digne and Konsa are first-choice players but the last game featured his side's strongest performance of the season, as they defeated Southampton 4-0.
