Leeds United news as Elland Road crowd praised and fitness update on key striker

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Monday, 14 March 2022.

Praise for Leeds fans

Danny Murphy has praised the reaction of Leeds United supporters after Norwich City’s equaliser in their 2-1 win over the Canaries on Sunday.

The Whites were pegged back in the first minute of stoppage time thanks to Kenny McLean’s goal after they had missed a hatful of chances to put the game to bed.

However, Leeds earned a vital three points as Joe Gelhardt netted the winner in the 94th minute and Murphy was impressed the reaction the fans showed following Norwich’s goal.

Speaking on Match of the Day, he said: “I have to give the Leeds fans credit today because even at 1-1, they didn’t drop. They just kept going. It was unbelievable. They’re going to need that as well. There are going to be some tough games to come.”

Bamford update

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has confirmed Patrick Bamford’s half time substitution was not down to an injury.

Bamford was starting his first match for the Whites since September after finally overcoming an array of injury problems.

The 28-year-old appeared to be limping during the celebrations of Joe Gelhardt’s late winner, but Marsch claimed after the match that Bamford is ‘fine’.

He said: "First of all, very happy with Patrick, [I] thought he had a very impactful 45 minutes, satisfied that that's all we needed to get out of him.

"Maybe 60 minutes might have been too much, and it was pretty clear at half-time that was enough.

"I would guess that Patrick is fine. I think we just could see that physically, it [45 minutes] was enough."

Dallas on Meslier

Leeds United defender Stuart Dallas has praised Illan Meslier for his vital late save to deny Teemu Pukki a very late equaliser.

The Whites had been pegged back in the first minute of stoppage time courtesy of Kenny McLean’s goal but found a winner just moments later thanks to Joe Gelhardt.

But the drama didn’t stop there, though, as Pukki latched onto a loose ball inside the box, before volleying an effort on target that was saved by the head of Meslier.

Speaking after the game, Dallas was quick to offer praise to the young Frenchman after a difficult run of matches.

He said: "Even when we've scored to go 2-1 up, we've got to credit Illan at the end of the game. He's maybe come under criticism for goals that we've conceded this year and he's been a bit hard on himself because obviously he's the goalkeeper, but he's saved that one with his head at the end.

"That could have been 2-2 and it could have been a different feeling. That emotion at the end, this is why you play football, for moments like this. Hopefully we can use that to build on now. We've another huge game away at Wolves on Friday night and it would be nice to get a result there going into the international break."
