Leeds United news as decision slammed which could cost Whites Premier League place

Here are this evening's Leeds United headlines on Sunday May 14, 2023 as the fallout continues from yesterday's 202 draw with Newcastle United.

Keys' big VAR claim

In the aftermath of yesterday's game, what happened to Eddie Howe and the subsequent arrest and charge, followed by the threats against Patrick Bamford, have meant some of the controversy around yesterday's VAR decision has gone under the radar.

Newcastle were awarded two penalties yesterday at Elland Road, the second coming from what was judged to be a Junior Firpo handball in the area. To most watching it looked like VAR showed the ball brushing the fingers of Firpo, but Keys is less convinced and had had a little rant on the subject.

“That decision could relegate Leeds,” Keys tweeted. “How can they give that? There’s no conclusive proof Junior handles it - in fact I’m not sure he did - the ball didn’t change direction at all. It’s an incredible call for me.”

Leeds tell fans abusing Bamford they're not welcome at club

Leeds United have condemned 'completely unacceptable online abuse' directed against Patrick Bamford in the aftermath of the draw with Newcastle United. The striker saw a first-half penalty saved in the 2-2 draw with the Magpies, with the result leaving the Whites a point adrift of safety.

The incident-packed clash at Elland Road was initially overshadowed by a supporter's ugly confrontation with Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe in the dugout. The fan has been subsequently charged following his arrest, with the club issuing a lifetime ban as a result.

Now, the Whites have been moved to address abuse directed against Bamford, insisting the 'time for this behaviour to stop is now'. A statement released on Sunday afternoon stressed those guilty of targeting the number nine online are 'not welcome' at Elland Road.

TalkSPORT duo slam supporter

TalkSPORT duo Gabby Agbonlahor and Jamie O'Hara have condemned the 'dangerous' Leeds United fan who confronted Eddie Howe in the dugout. The Newcastle United head coach was shoved in the closing stages of the 2-2 draw at Elland Road by the supporter who was eventually dragged away by matchday staff.

Agbonlahor and O'Hara discussed the draw at first in their review of Saturday's action, which leaves Sam Allardyce's side a point adrift of safety with two matches remaining in their season. However, the pundits moved on to the confrontation with the former comparing it to Jack Grealish being punched on the pitch by a fan during a derby-day encounter between Aston Villa and Birmingham in March 2019.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: "He's got to be punished because like we said when we saw it Jamie, he could have had anything on him. Luckily for Eddie Howe, he only pushed him. We've seen the incident with Grealish in the Villa-Blues game, there's got to be a big punishment for the fan.
