Leeds United news as Covid changes impact fans, Bielsa youth approach praised

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday, 19 January.

What Covid policy changes mean for Leeds fans

Football fans attending live matches had been forced to show either proof that they had received both Covid-19 vaccinations or a negative lateral flow test to enter stadiums as of mid-December.

However, it now looks as though that won't be the case as the government have announced that most restrictions will be scrapped towards the end of this month.

The choice will lie with the clubs themselves as to whether they will choose to enforce such measures but it is hard to imagine that many will continue to ask for the Covid status of fans.

Face masks will not be needed in the indoor parts of the stadiums either although, like with most non-outdoor spaces, the wearing of a face covering will still be advised for those who are not medically exempt.

Augustin dispute not expected to affect Aaronson move

Leeds have identified Brenden Aaronson as the primary transfer target for the remainder of the current transfer window.

The Athletic reported yesterday that Red Bull Salzburg had turned down a £15m bid but the Whites are expected to return with a larger offer.

However, there were some worries that the club’s ongoing legal battle regarding Jean-Kevin Augustin with the Red Bull sister club, Leipzig, might affect proceedings.

LeedsLive understands that those problems will not affect negotiations with Salzburg although, a deal for the American midfielder still might not be easy to agree.

With the Austrian side racing clear in their domestic league as well as preparing for a Champions League last-16 tie with Bayern Munich, Aaronson may want to hold fire on a move.

Sutton praises Bielsa’s trust in young players

In the midst of a season that has been heavily affected by injuries, Marcelo Bielsa has turned to his most promising youngsters on a number of occasions.

Eight teenagers have made their top-flight debuts for Leeds this term, a Premier League record and while it has been largely forced upon on him, Christ Sutton has been impressed with the Argentine boss.

“You can imagine being a youth team player across the county and your first-team manager comes over and takes the sessions, how good does that make you feel,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

“I think it's interesting the way Leeds do things and the way Bielsa likes to work with a smaller squad and how he has faith in the young players.

"They've had [James] Milner, [Jonathan] Woodgate, Alan Smith, [Fabian] Delph and it's been a real conveyor belt and Bielsa has carried that on."
