Leeds United news as Carragher praises Whites youngster and Marsch tactics analysed

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Tuesday, 15 March 2022.

Carragher’s Gelhardt praise

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hailed Joe Gelhardt as a ‘special talent’ after his stoppage time winner for Leeds United on Sunday.

Gelhardt steered in Raphinha’s cutback in the 94 th minute to earn the Whites a much-needed 2-1 win over Norwich City.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Elland Road and is already justifying why Leeds were so keen to sign him in the summer of 2020.

Carragher, whose son James played with Gelhardt while at Wigan Athletic, was full of praise for the way he maintained his composure in the final minutes.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, he said: “He gets the flick on initially, brilliant up against the big defender. This composure he shows, doesn’t panic. Yes, it’s an open goal, you might say it’s easy, but it’s at that time of the game, the ball’s flashing across you.

“And he’s a special, special talent. He’ll be remembered now for this big goal, but I can assure you, he is a lad we will be talking about a lot in a few years’ time, he really is.”

Marsch tactics

Jesse Marsch earned his first win as Leeds United manager at the third time of asking against Norwich City on Sunday.

The Whites have had a busy run of fixtures during his first two weeks in charge with three games in just eight days.

That has meant Marsch has had a limited amount of time on the training pitch with his new squad and has instead had to resort to predominantly using video sessions.

However, against the Canaries it looked as though Leeds were really getting to grips with what Marsch wants them to do.

Richards on relegation

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has backed Leeds United to stay up after their late victory over Norwich City on Sunday.

The Whites ended their run of eight games without a win against the Canaries to move four points clear of the bottom three.

Speaking on BBC 5Live’s Monday Night Club, Richards thinks Everton could be the side who end up relegated due to the expectations on their shoulders.

He said: "I would pick Leeds [to stay up] just because of the last-minute winner from [Joe] Gelhardt. You look at Everton and the amount of money they've spent, they haven't been relegated out of the Premier League.

"They don't expect to be in this position and that just brings more pressure. They brought in Lampard, I thought it would be a good fit and it might prove to be the case if they stay up. He will then get a full pre-season and can get his style of play engrained in the squad.”
