Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Saturday, 22 January 2022.
Poveda situation
Leeds United winger Ian Poveda could still feature for Blackburn Rovers with his loan deal still rolling for the club.
Poveda joined Rovers on a season-long-loan back in the summer but fractured his ankle during the November draw with Bristol City.
With Poveda completing his rehabilitation at Leeds, talks took place over cutting the deal short, however that never materialised and so Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray remains confident he could have some involvement before the end of the season.
Via the Lancashire Telegraph, he said: “That’s still rolling, we’re still paying that, he’s still one of our players but doing his rehab at Leeds which I’m fine with, it helps his living situation.
“As soon as he’s fit he’s still a contracted player to us and he’ll be back in our training situation.
“That’s still a fair way away from him playing football.
“I’m content that he’s at Leeds at the moment but that will change, maybe four to six weeks, let’s wait and see whether he can come back and have some impact later on.”
Whelan makes Bate claim
Noel Whelan believes Lewis Bate now has an important role to play at Leeds United after his performance against West Ham.
Bate replaced the injured Adam Forshaw midway through the first half and although he was then later substituted for Rodrigo, the 19-year-old made a solid impact on the game.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan liked the reaction he showed to being taken off and thinks he should be proud of the way he played.
He said: “It’s brilliant to see that reaction from him.
“He’s in that first-team for a reason, he’s obviously a great young talent.
“But it doesn’t matter what age you are, no one likes being taken off when you’ve come on as a substitute.
“I can see his disappointment, and it’s good to see that emotion from him on the bench. But at the same time, he didn’t let it linger – as soon as the three points were in the bag, he will have realised his massive contribution.
“Leeds United are going to need and rely on him from now until the end of the season, whether that’s for 60 minutes or 40 minutes.
“He didn’t look out of place in that midfield at all when Forshaw went off.”
Austrian view on Aaronson
Brenden Aaronson may have to try force through a move to Leeds United if he wants to join the club this month.
Leeds have submitted a second bid for Aaronson worth around £20 million and while there has been no word on the outcome of that offer, RB Salzburg are reluctant to lose him this month.
The 21-year-old only joined Salzburg in January last year and the Austrian side typically keep players for at least two seasons before selling them on for big money.
Salzburg also made big money on the sales of Patson Daka and Enock Mwepu in the summer, meaning they are already in a strong position financially.
