Leeds United news as Ajax urged to 'cut £20m losses' and offer struggling star to Jesse Marsch

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday, January 18.

Ajax urged to 'cut £20m losses' and offer struggling star Calvin Bassey to Leeds United

Ajax have been told to cut their losses on struggling left-back Calvin Bassey and offer him up to Leeds United at half-price by former Netherlands international Rene van der Gijp.

The former Leicester City academy player was bought by the Eredivisie giants for £20million from Rangers last summer but has since flopped after receiving a straight red card just 15 minutes into his debut.

"If I were Ajax, I would call Southampton and Leeds United and say; ‘You can have him for €12.5 million (£10.97 million)," Van der Gijp told Dutch talk show Veronica Inside.

"Where did it go wrong (at Ajax)? How dissatisfied will they be there. Two years ago, everyone thought they were going to become the Bayern Munich of the Netherlands. Totally untouchable. So you see what a little mismanagement can do in a year. [It can] mess up your whole club."

Leeds United's board could see how long Elland Road is giving Jesse Marsch vs Cardiff City

Can they stop the rot?

However anyone may want to dress up or dress down the form book (two wins in 17 matches, one loss in four) or the quality of the opposition or the inferiority of the competition, Leeds United need to win. It has been so long since the players and fans were able to enjoy that winning feeling.

Brentford is the more important match this week, but the manner of tonight against Cardiff City will play a huge role in emotions going into that 2pm kick-off on Sunday. If last Friday really is to be a turning point under Jesse Marsch, there has to be evidence of the same level against the Bluebirds.

Crowd reaction?

As was the case in October when Leeds returned to Elland Road after their midweek Leicester City trip, all eyes are on whether the home support follows the away trend. The pockets of ‘Marsch out’ chants at Villa Park set the bar for current fan feeling and tonight’s performance will be judged accordingly in LS11.

Jesse Marsch set for late Patrick Bamford Leeds United call as he makes 'best ever' Rodrigo claim

Jesse Marsch says he's yet to decide on who'll lead the line for Leeds United in their FA Cup third round replay against Cardiff City. Patrick Bamford scored for the Whites against Aston Villa to end his goal scoring drought, but it was his strike partner Rodrigo who put in one of the best striker performances Marsch has ever seen.

The Leeds head coach said all that was missing from the Spaniard's performance was a goal at Villa Park. Rodrigo has been the standout performer at Elland Road this season, topping the goal scoring charts for Marsch's side.

However, with Bamford now back fully fit, Marsch has a decision to make over who will start against Cardiff City tomorrow night. Neither player started the first encounter between the two sides at Cardiff earlier this month, but it was Rodrigo who got Leeds back on track at the Cardiff City Stadium.
