Leeds United misery at Everton compounded by relegation battle's latest twists

The relegation picture in the Premier League for Leeds United has taken a turn for the worst after Saturday afternoon's results saw them drop to 19th and into the bottom three for the first time this season.

Seamus Coleman scored the only goal in the match after he got onto the end of a deep ball played over the top by Alex Iwobi and scored past Illan Meslier from a tight angle with the goalkeeper stood in the middle of his six-yard box.

The loss is the Whites' second of the three matches since former manager Jesse Marsch was sacked and with the club looking unlikely to appoint a manager in the coming days, fans are starting to get nervous.

The result at Goodison Park also means Sean Dyche's Everton lifted themselves to 16th and above West Ham and Bournemouth onto 21 points, now two clear of the Whites.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Southampton brought themselves one step closer to safety with a 1-0 win over Chelsea thanks to a James Ward-Prowse free kick.

The Saints were all over Graham Potter's Blues throughout the first half, at the end of which the star midfielder once again yielded his magic to give them the lead.

Despite several good chances for Chelsea coming in the second half, the Saints somehow kept the ball out of their net and after 12 minutes of added time following a lengthy stoppage for Cesar Azpilicueta's head injury, the full-time whistle was blown.

It means that they are just a point behind Leeds in the drop zone and sets both clubs up for another enormous six-pointer next weekend.

Finally, Nottingham Forest loanee Chris Wood fired in a late equaliser against Manchester City to stop their bid to go top of the table.

Bernardo Silva's 41st-minute goal cemented City's intention in the first half and they could've gone 2-0 up if not for Erling Haaland's awful four-yard miss in the second half.

But Wood stepped up to the plate, latching onto a perfect ball across the six-yard area from Morgan Gibbs-White to poke it past Ederson and into the back of the net.

That draw means Forest are now six points clear of Leeds in the table, and are up to 13th. West Ham and Leicester both have games in hand over Leeds but will play later this weekend against Tottenham and Manchester United respectively.
