Leeds United midfielder handed huge World Cup disappointment

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich has been left out of the Poland squad for the World Cup in Qatar that gets underway this month. Klich has been a regular for his country in recent years but his lack of game time has seen his World Cup dream fall flat on its face at the final hurdle.

At 32, this was arguably the last opportunity of Klich's playing career to feature in the competition, however that will no longer be the case. He has played just 188 minutes of Premier League football this season and has been an unused substitute in each of the last two matches.

Reports had indicated in the summer that Klich was keen to leave in order to secure regular minutes elsewhere to cement his place in the Poland squad, but conversations with Jesse Marsch appeared to reverse that decision. Klich has been capped 41 times for Poland and ever since becoming a regular under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, has always been a staple of the squad.

He is the second player to receive disappointment on the international front today with Robin Koch having also missed out on a place in the Germany squad. Koch has been unable to convince manager Hansi Flick despite having started every game so far this season.

It has not all been bad news on the World Cup front for Leeds players, though, with Rasmus Kristensen, Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson set to feature in Qatar. Kristensen will represent Denmark, with the other two making the USA squad.
