Leeds United mid-season ratings as Tyler Adams impact felt in early transfer window endorsement

Leeds United have had an up and down Premier League season so far. The Whites started so brightly with wins coming over Wolves and Chelsea, but their form tailed off after that, going eight games without a win.

The remarkable victory at Liverpool bucked that streak, though, and a win over Bournemouth followed at the start of November. Jesse Marsch’s side couldn’t build on that at Tottenham Hotspur last time out, unfortunately, losing 4-3 after taking the lead three times in the game.

Some players have really caught the eye this season so far, while others have struggled to get going and find form. With the Premier League taking a break for the World Cup, Leeds Live provide their player ratings for the season so far.

Only those who have played three first-team games or more have been included.

Illan Meslier: 8

One of the Whites’ most consistent this season. He’s still one of the youngest players in the starting XI at 22, but he’s shown heaps of maturity and level-headedness so far.

His performance against Liverpool immediately springs to mind, making nine saves at Anfield, but he’s been a safe pair of hands throughout the campaign and probably deserves to have more than two clean sheets to his name.

Luke Ayling: 6

Missed the first month of the season through injury and has found himself behind Rasmus Kristensen in the pecking order, having to make do with appearances off the bench. He’ll be keen to stake a claim for a spot over the World Cup break.

Junior Firpo: 4

He’s only made three first-team appearances this season and he’s failed to convince. Right now he’s rooted behind Pascal Struijk and if Leeds are to push to sign a new left-back in January, as has been suggested, that won’t help his chances of picking up regular minutes in the new year.

Adam Forshaw: 5

Played a bit-part role at the start of the season to relative success, but he’s been missing since September through injury, meaning he has played just 47 Premier League minutes.

Robin Koch: 7

Koch has been Leeds’ best centre-back so far this season, finding consistency and continuity with his performances at the back. His form has fallen off a little over the last couple of weeks but the defender can still count himself unfortunate not to be in Qatar with the German national team.

Liam Cooper: 6.5

The skipper missed a majority of pre-season and the first month of the Premier League campaign thanks to injury, but he slotted into the side at the start of October and instantly helped them keep a clean sheet. He hasn’t always looked at his best this season, but he gives his side so much through his leadership ability and experience.

Brenden Aaronson: 7.5

An instant hit following his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg over the summer. The USA international had the Elland Road crowd on its feet with his performances in wins over Wolves and Chelsea and that set the tone for what has been a fine first season so far.

Aaronson’s pressing game is tailor-made for Marsch’s style of play and when he’s been on his game, more often than not, Leeds have turned in a strong showing.

Marc Roca: 7

The midfielder hadn’t played much at Bayern Munich before his move to Elland Road but he has slotted seamlessly into the Whites midfield and hit it off with Tyler Adams to produce a promising partnership.

He has demonstrated his wide range of passing and he’s willing to bust a gut and put his body on the line for the cause.

Patrick Bamford: 5

It’s been a season to forget for Bamford so far. Niggling injuries have seen him struggle to find any sort of form on the field and his confidence seems to have taken a huge hit as a result.

He has managed to make just four Premier League starts and it’s almost been a year since he last hit the net in a competitive, senior fixture for the club.

Crysencio Summerville: 7.5

Summerville played a bit-part role for the Whites over the first couple of months, making a number of brief appearances off the bench and failing to really find his feet in the side. However, his career has well and truly taken off in the weeks since being given his first start for the club at Leicester City.

Heading into the World Cup break, Summerville has scored four goals in his last four games, including late winners against Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Jack Harrison: 6.5

The winger started the season well, creating chances, recording assists and even finding the back of the net in the win over Chelsea. However, his form has slumped over the last month or so and he’ll be keen to rebuild his confidence after the World Cup break.

Tyler Adams: 8

Another star performer this season, Adams has been instrumental in the success Leeds have seen this season, with his dogged and lung-busting performances in the middle picking up plenty of plaudits. He’s away with the USA national team for the World Cup and Jesse Marsch will have his fingers and toes crossed that he returns to Thorp Arch unscathed.

Diego Llorente: 5

Llorente started the season in the middle of the Whites’ backline but a calamitous performance at Brentford saw him lose his spot in the side and he has featured just once in the league since. The Spaniard will know he needs to up his game.

Rodrigo: 8

He hasn’t always been the most popular player at Elland Road, but he’s produced the goods in front of goal this season and he has nine goals to his name so far. That’s not bad going, either, when you consider he has a scoring rate of a goal every 99 minutes.

The 31-year-old has more than cemented his spot up front for the Whites and having bagged five in his four, he’ll be keen to pick up where he left off when the action resumes after Christmas.

Pascal Struijk: 7

Struijk has made the left-back spot his own so far this season with a series of promising and mature performances on the flank. He’s bagged himself a goal, scoring the opener at Crystal Palace, and he’s had international recognition, too, after being named on Louis van Gaal’s provisional Netherlands squad list for the World Cup.

Luis Sinisterra: 7

He’s been Leeds’ biggest threat when he’s been on the field, but at this stage of the season injury and suspension has limited him to just five starts and he is nursing a Lisfranc issue at present. Marsch will hope to see the Colombian return action after the break and Sinisterra will be keen to finally make his mark at Elland Road.

Rasmus Kristensen: 6.5

The Dane had a difficult start to life in West Yorkshire, there’s no doubt about that, as he struggled with the pace and the physicality of the English game. However, he has made plenty of strides since the September international break and he has looked the part in recent weeks.

Strong performances throughout October and November have seen him keep the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Gabriel Martinelli and Andy Robertson quiet.

Wilfried Gnonto: 7

The 19-year-old has had to be patient since arriving on deadline day, but he has featured in Leeds’ last four and he’s certainly shown plenty of promise with his performances. He’ll be looking to kick on and really cement his spot in Marsch’s plans over the winter.

Joe Gelhardt: 6

Gelhardt has made 13 appearances this season, but he’s played just 162 Premier League minutes and he’s struggled to make the desired impact as a result. He looked short of confidence in the Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves and he’ll be hoping the second half of the campaign goes much smoother.

Sam Greenwood: 6.5

He’s made just six appearances this season, but he’s has seen progress over the last few weeks, picking up his first start of the year against Fulham and coming up with a goal and an assist to help Leeds come from behind to win against Bournemouth.

Mateusz Klich: 6

Another who has had a season to forget so far. Klich is still waiting to make his first Premier League start this campaign and having seen his Premier League game time restricted to 188 minutes, he has missed out on the Poland squad for the World Cup.
