Steven Gerrard Leeds United job link amid new boss search as club chief makes 'well advanced' claim

Steven Gerrard is the latest name to be linked with the vacant Leeds United job after Celtic's Ange Postecoglou was also touted.

The Elland Road hot-seat is up for grabs after enthusiastic manager Jesse Marsch was given the boot last week. The latest English Premier League vacancy has sparked links with former Rangers boss Gerrard whose first experience of the top flight ended badly with a failed run at Aston Villa being cut short after around a year in charge.

The Liverpool icon may, however, be in tough competition as recently sacked Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder is reportedly 'in talks' with Leeds while many had pitched Postecoglou for what would be a surprising move down south. Club CEO Angus Kinnear came out to allay fears for fans on their hunt for a new boss but admitted the candidate must be able to take up the role even mid-season.

He said: “The search for a new head coach is well advanced.

"The task is being able to align our list of prospects – which has been built and evolved over many seasons – with current availability and the openness of candidates to accept a new role in mid-season.

“While we have confidence in the caretaker team, we know the importance of a prompt appointment and, if Victor (Orta) and I are in any doubt, we have Andrea (Radrizzani)’s Twitter account to keep the pressure on.”
