Leeds United-linked Nottingham Forest prodigy lauded by Ian Wright after impressing for Wales

Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson has been linked with Leeds United and Arsenal legend Ian Wright has become the latest to heap praise on his progress. The 20-year-old has won plenty of plaudits for his displays in the Championship this season but it was his impact at international level that has drawn attention this week.

He started and completed 81 minutes for Wales in their 1-1 friendly draw with Czech Republic, catching the eye with a series of incisive darts in behind the Czech defence. The playmaker was unlucky not to etch his name on the scoresheet but did provide an assist for Rubin Colwill's equaliser.

Wright was on punditry duty for ITV's International Football Highlights and heaped praise on Johnson, saying: "When you’re seeing players like that coming through, it has got to be quite exciting. Brennan Johnson, every time you see him he looks better. 11 goals, five assists this season in the Championship. They are improving."

He has also been linked with the likes of Newcastle United and Brentford but Leeds are known to be long-term admirers of the prodigy, who has been on their radar for a number of years. Whites director of football Victor Orta recently admitted Leeds attempted to prise Johnson from Forest when he was just 16 as part of their plan to recruit talented prospects at a young age.

Under the tutelage of Forest boss Steve Cooper, he has built on the promise he showed during his spell on loan at League One outfit Lincoln City. This season, his 11 goals and five assists have helped put the Reds firmly in contention for a play-off spot and have also helped Johnson establish himself as a regular in the Wales squad.

According to The Athletic, he was the subject of a £15m bid from Brentford in the January transfer window and if Forest do not clinch promotion to the top flight this season, it would not be particularly surprising to see a bidding war break out.

Leeds do not operate with a bloated squad but will want to bolster in the summer to avoid being dragged into another relegation battle next season if they manage to stay up. Johnson fits the bill regarding age and energy, therefore he could be a viable target for Orta and head coach Jesse Marsch.
