Leeds United-linked midfielder confirms next move as he seals surprise Championship switch

Leeds United-linked midfielder John Swift will be staying in the Championship next season after confirming his next move. Swift has penned a three-year deal with West Bromwich Albion with his contract at Reading set to come to an end this summer.

Throughout the season, Swift has been linked with a move to Leeds and several other Premier League clubs following a stand-out individual season in a poor Reading side. The likes of Brentford and Wolves had also been mentioned as possible destinations for the former Chelsea youth man, but it is the Baggies who have won the race for his signature.

Leeds confirmed their first signing of the summer on Thursday as attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson completed his switch from Red Bull Salzburg. Aaronson became Leeds’ first permanent midfield signing in over four years but the Whites aren’t likely to stop there as they look to recruit at least one more defensive minded player in that area of the pitch.

Swift would’ve fitted that mould despite netting 11 goals and providing 13 assists for the Royals last season, as he almost single-handedly keeping them in the division following their six-point deduction. He had spent six years at the Select Car Leasing Stadium but with the club currently dealing with ongoing financial issues, has decided to move on.

Following a disappointing campaign last term, West Brom will be hoping they can push for promotion this season as Steve Bruce looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the top six. The Baggies were many people’s tip for promotion finished 10th after 46 matches, eight points adrift of Luton Town in the play-offs.
